A Look at Dexter's History
The land that became the Town of Dexter was first mapped out in the summer of 1851. This was done by a team working for the U.S. government. They walked through the forests and swamps to measure the land. They marked important spots called "section corners" to create a grid for the area.
When they finished, the surveyor described the land. He said it was mostly flat and swampy, with lots of tamarack trees. There was a narrow strip of drier land along the Yellow River. Some parts had good pine trees. The rest of the area was covered with small pine and tamarack trees, along with thick bushes.
The surveyor also noted two sawmills in the area. These mills were important for cutting timber. The Town of Dexter got its name from the community of Dexterville.
