History of Dexterville
Early Days and Lumber
Dexterville began around the year 1848. A few years later, in 1850, an important person named George Hiles moved to the area. He was a very successful businessman in the lumber industry. He built a large lumbermill in Dexterville. This mill helped the community grow.
The name "Dexter" for the town might come from Dexter, Michigan. This was the original home of one of the first settlers. However, some people say the town was named after a pioneer's mule! In 1858, George Hiles helped Dexterville get its own post office.
Railroad Connections
To help move timber from the area, George Hiles created the Milwaukee, Dexterville, and Northern Railroad in 1887. This railroad was bought by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad a few years later. The train tracks passed right through Dexterville by 1890.
Dexterville Dam and Lake
The Dexterville Dam is located on the southern edge of Lake Dexter. This dam holds back the Yellow River, creating Dexter Lake. The dam was built by Wood County to create a waterfront area. This area is now part of Dexter County Park, a place where people can enjoy the lake.
