About Dezron Douglas
Dezron Douglas grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, in the United States. He started learning music at a young age. He studied tuba and bass at the Hartford Conservatory of Music. Later, he went to The Hartt School at the University of Hartford. There, he focused on African American Music and History. His teacher was the famous alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. Dezron's uncle, Walter Bolden, was also a well-known drummer and composer.
His Music and Albums
Dezron Douglas has released several albums as a band leader. His first album, Live at Smalls, came out in 2012. It received good reviews from The New York Times. They said his music felt very alive and real.
Dezron also plays with many other musicians. When he plays with others, he is called a "sideman." He has recorded with artists like Cyrus Chestnut, Louis Hayes, and Makaya McCraven. In 2019, his bass playing was even featured in a documentary by Beyoncé called Homecoming. This recording was from an NPR Music session in 2013.
He has been a long-time member of the Ravi Coltrane Quartet. He also performed with the Louis Hayes Jazz Communicators.
Awards and Recognition
In 2019, Dezron Douglas won an important award. He was named "Rising Star bassist" in the Downbeat critics poll. DownBeat magazine is very famous in the jazz world. In July 2020, Dezron was featured on the cover of DownBeat magazine. He appeared with Brandee Younger and six other talented artists.
In 2021, Dezron joined the Trey Anastasio Band. He took the place of the band's previous bassist, Tony Markellis.
