Early Life and Musical Journey
Ravi Coltrane was born on Long Island, New York. He is the son of two famous jazz musicians: saxophonist John Coltrane and jazz harpist Alice Coltrane. He was named after the famous Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar.
Ravi was less than two years old when his father, John Coltrane, passed away in 1967. After this, his mother moved the family to Los Angeles, California. Ravi was a shy child who first liked photography and film. He started playing the clarinet, but later switched to the saxophone in high school.
Education and Influences
Ravi graduated from El Camino Real High School in 1983. In 1986, he went to the California Institute of the Arts to study music, focusing on the saxophone. He has worked a lot with Steve Coleman, who greatly influenced his music. Ravi has also played with many other well-known musicians, including Herbie Hancock and Carlos Santana.
A sad event happened in 1982 when his older brother, John Coltrane Jr., died in a car accident. This was a very difficult time for Ravi, and he even left school for a while. However, this tragedy also led him to reconnect with music. It helped him decide to study music seriously. After graduating, he moved to Queens, New York, and began working with famous musicians like Elvin Jones and Jack DeJohnette.
Music Career Highlights
Ravi Coltrane started his career by playing with many different artists. He was a "sideman," meaning he played as part of another musician's band. By 1997, he had played on over thirty recordings.
First Albums and Tours
In 1997, Ravi released his first album as a band leader, called Moving Pictures. He worked with talented musicians like drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. This album led to him touring with his own band. His second album, From the Round Box, came out in 2000. He continued to release albums, including Mad 6 in 2002 and In Flux in 2005.
In 2005, Ravi Coltrane traveled to India for the first time. He was part of a group of American jazz musicians sent by the U.S. government. Their goal was to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. During this trip, Ravi met Ravi Shankar, the sitar player he was named after. It was a special moment for him.
Festival Performances and Collaborations
Ravi Coltrane's quartet has performed at many famous jazz festivals around the world. These include the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2001 and 2013, and the Newport Jazz Festival in 2004.
In 2008, Ravi became a member of the Blue Note 7. This group was formed to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records, a very famous jazz record label. The group recorded an album called Mosaic and toured the United States.
Ravi has continued to perform in many places, including the Village Vanguard in New York City. In 2016, he traveled to Australia to play at the opening of Bird's Basement, which is the first international location of the famous Birdland jazz club.
Personal Life and Legacy
Ravi Coltrane lives in Brooklyn, New York. He is married to Kathleen Hennessy, and they have two sons, William and Aaron.
