About the Festival
The festival takes place on the Monterey County Fairgrounds. This area is about 20 acres and has many oak trees. It is held every year on the third full weekend in September.
Many top jazz artists perform on nine different stages. There are about 50 concert performances. The festival also offers other fun activities. These include jazz talks, workshops, and exhibitions. You can also find international food and shopping.
Festival Leadership
From 1992 to 2010, Tim Jackson was in charge of the festival's art. Later, he became the artistic director. In 2014, Colleen Bailey became the managing director. Since 1992, actor Clint Eastwood has been on the festival's board. The festival has grown a lot over the years. It now includes jazz, blues, and rock music. Darin Atwater is the current artistic director.
Festival Attendance
The festival has been very popular. In 2006, a record 40,000 people attended. All five main concerts were sold out. In 2007, 40,000 people also came for the 50th anniversary.
The festival did not happen in 2020. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 63rd festival was moved to 2021 instead.
Supporting Music Education
The Monterey Jazz Festival is a non-profit organization. This means it uses its money to help others. Since 1958, it has used its earnings for music education. In 1970, the festival started a scholarship program. It began with $35,000 to help students. By 2012, the festival was investing $600,000 each year. This money helps young people learn about jazz.
Every spring, the festival hosts the "Next Generation Festival." Student musicians from all over the world come to play. Paul Contos has worked with the festival for many years. He helped direct the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. He also led the Monterey County All-Stars.
Dave Brubeck was very important in starting the first festival. He performed for the city council. This helped convince them to allow the festival. Brubeck played at the festival 14 times. His last performance was at the 50th anniversary in 2007.
The Monterey Pop Festival also happened at the fairgrounds. This was a rock music festival in 1967. It was part of the "Summer of Love."
