When she was 16, Dee Dee sang in a rock and R&B group in clubs in Michigan. At 18, she studied at Michigan State University and later at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1969, she even toured the Soviet Union with her school's jazz band.
Starting Her Jazz Career
In 1970, she met and married trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater. They moved to New York City, where her jazz career truly began. In the early 1970s, Dee Dee became the main singer for the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra.
She performed with many famous jazz musicians like Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, and Dexter Gordon. In 1973, she performed at the well-known Monterey Jazz Festival.
