Glinda, also known as the Good Witch of the north, is a fictional character from the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. She first appears in Baum's famous 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Glinda is the most powerful sorceress in the Land of Oz. She rules the Quadling Country in the South and protects Princess Ozma.

Literature

L. Frank Baum's Books

In Baum's 1900 book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Glinda is called the "Good Witch of the South." She appears later in the story. After the Wizard leaves, Dorothy and her friends travel to the Quadling Country to ask Glinda for help. In the well-known 1939 movie, Glinda is a mix of the Good Witch of the South and the Good Witch of the North. Baum's later books call her a "Sorceress" instead of a "witch". He showed that not all witches were bad.

In the books, Glinda looks like a beautiful young woman with long, red hair and blue eyes. She wears a pure white dress. She is much older than she looks, but she knows how to stay young. This is mentioned in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She has ruled the Quadling Country since she defeated the Wicked Witch of the South. This happened when Ozma's grandfather was king of Oz.

Glinda plays a big part in finding and bringing back Princess Ozma. Ozma is the true ruler of Oz. Glinda had been looking for Ozma since she was a baby. After Ozma becomes queen, Glinda helps her lead the Land of Oz. She doesn't just protect her own Quadling Kingdom anymore. Glinda only steps in if Ozma asks for her advice or help.

Glinda knows a lot about magic. She also uses many tools and charms in her workshop. In The Emerald City of Oz, we learn she has a Great Book of Records. This book lets her see everything happening in the world as it occurs. She also teaches the Wizard magic. He becomes very skilled, but he knows Glinda is still more powerful.

Glinda lives in a palace near the northern border of the Quadling Country. Fifty beautiful maidens from Oz attend to her. She also has a large army of female soldiers. She uses this army to fight General Jinjur's Army of Revolt. This army had taken over the Emerald City in The Marvelous Land of Oz. Men are not common in Glinda's court.

Glinda cares deeply for her people in the South. She created special walled communities for the rabbits of Bunnybury and the paper dolls of Miss Cuttenclip. This shows she cares about all the different people and creatures in her land.

In The Emerald City of Oz, Glinda helps Ozma protect the citizens of Oz. She makes Oz invisible to people flying overhead in airplanes. Glinda knows that not everything can be fixed with magic. She understands that some things cannot be changed.

Glinda created the Forbidden Fountain with the Waters of Oblivion. This fountain is in the center of Oz. Its waters helped a cruel former King of Oz become good again. This happened "many centuries ago," showing Glinda's great age. This fountain later saves Oz from the invading Nome King and his friends. It makes them forget their bad plans.

In The Emerald City of Oz, General Guph tells the Nome King that Glinda's castle is "at the North of the Emerald City." However, Glinda rules the South. This might have been a mistake by Guph. But it also hints at how Glinda is shown as the Good Witch of the North in the 1939 MGM film.

General Guph also says Glinda "commands the spirits of the air." This statement also hints at later movies. In the film version of The Wiz, Glinda (played by Lena Horne) creates the twister that brings Dorothy's house to Oz.

Glinda is one of the most mysterious characters in Baum's Oz books. Even though she is called "Glinda the Good," she is not just a simple good character. She is wise and always stays focused on her goals. Other adult characters like the Wizard are not as wise or determined as Glinda.

In Baum's last book, Glinda of Oz, we learn that Glinda lives in a castle with one hundred of the most beautiful women in Oz.

Wicked (novel)

In Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda is first called "Galinda." She comes from a noble family. Her story is important in the first half of the book.

At first, Galinda is snobby and focused on herself. But she is also smart enough to get into Shiz University. There, she shares a room with Elphaba. After not liking each other for a long time, the two girls become good friends.

Galinda later drops the first 'a' from her name. She does this to honor Doctor Dillamond, a Goat who taught at Shiz. He often accidentally called her "Glinda." His death also makes Glinda think about her life. She decides to study sorcery and becomes very good at it.

In the novel, she marries Sir Chuffrey and they have no children. She doesn't like Elphaba's sister, Nessarose, at first. Nessarose later becomes the Wicked Witch of the East. But Glinda becomes close to her after Elphaba leaves. She also enchants the Silver Shoes that help Nessarose walk.

Like in the original Oz books, Glinda is a powerful sorceress. Maguire's story follows the 1939 movie by having Glinda become the Witch of the North, not the South.

Early Films

In The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays (1908), Glinda was played by Evelyn Judson. She was played by Olive Cox in the 1910 film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In that film, she makes Toto bigger to protect Dorothy better.
