Frances Hardman Conroy (born March 15, 1953) is an American actress. She is well-known for her role as Ruth Fisher in the TV show Six Feet Under (2001–2005). For this role, she won a Golden Globe award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. She was also nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards.
Conroy is also famous for playing older Moira O'Hara in the first season of American Horror Story. She later played many other characters in the show, like The Angel of Death, Myrtle Snow, and Gloria Mott. She has appeared in seven more seasons of American Horror Story, including Asylum, Coven, and Freak Show. She is one of the few actors who has been in most seasons of this popular show.
In 2017, she starred as Nathalie Raven in The Mist. In 2019, she played the main character's mother in the movie Joker. In 2021, she had a supporting role in the movie The Power of the Dog.

Early Life and Education
Frances Conroy was born on March 15, 1953, in Monroe, Georgia. Her father was a business executive, and her mother also worked in business.
She went to Dickinson College in Pennsylvania for a year. Later, she moved to New York City to study acting. She trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Juilliard School. At Juilliard, she was in a special drama group with other famous actors like Kelsey Grammer and Robin Williams.

Starting Out on Stage and Screen
In the 1970s, Frances Conroy often performed in plays with different theater groups. She played Desdemona in a production of Othello. One of her first movie roles was in Woody Allen's 1979 film, Manhattan.
In 1980, she made her first appearance on Broadway in a play called The Lady from Dubuque. For the next 20 years, she mostly focused on her stage career. She appeared in plays like Our Town and The Little Foxes. She won a Drama Desk Award and was nominated for a Tony Award. Becoming Famous with Six Feet Under
Frances Conroy became very well-known for her role in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under. She played Ruth Fisher, the mother of the family, from 2001 to 2005.
For her work on the show, Conroy won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama in 2004. She was also nominated for four Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series awards. American Horror Story and Recent Work
In 2011, Frances Conroy joined the cast of a new show called American Horror Story on FX. She played a character named Moira O'Hara. This show is an anthology series, which means each season tells a completely different story with new characters. Conroy was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her role.
For the second season, Asylum, Conroy returned to play Shachath, The Angel of Death. In 2013, she played Maybelle Carter in the TV movie Ring of Fire. In 2014, she was in the fourth season, Freak Show, as Gloria Mott. She later appeared in the 2016 season, Roanoke. In July 2017, it was announced that Conroy would be in American Horror Story: Cult, making it her sixth time on the show.
In 2018, Conroy played her characters Myrtle Snow and Moira O'Hara again in American Horror Story: Apocalypse. This was her seventh appearance in the series. In 2019, she co-starred in the movie Joker, playing the mother of the main character.
She returned to American Horror Story in 2021 for American Horror Story: Double Feature. In the same year, she played Mrs. Burbank in the movie The Power of the Dog. For this film, she won a Satellite Award. In 2023, Conroy lent her voice to the character of The Director in the animated movie Nimona.
Personal Life
Frances Conroy married Jonathan Furst in 1980, but they later divorced. In 1992, she married actor Jan Munroe.
She was in a car accident that affected her right eye. After surgery, her eye changed color.
