Frances Hardman Conroy (born March 15, 1953) is an American actress. She is well-known for her roles in television shows and movies.
Many people know her as Ruth Fisher from the TV series Six Feet Under (2001–2005). For this role, she won a Golden Globe award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. She was also nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards.
Frances Conroy is also famous for her different characters in the TV series American Horror Story. She played Moira O'Hara in the first season. Later, she appeared as The Angel of Death, Myrtle Snow, Gloria Mott, and other characters in many seasons of the show. Her work on American Horror Story earned her more Emmy nominations.
She also appeared in the Hulu series Casual and the movie The Mist. In 2019, she played the main character's mother in the film Joker. In 2021, she had a supporting role in The Power of the Dog.

Frances Conroy was born on March 15, 1953. She studied acting at the famous Juilliard School. She was part of a special acting group there from 1973 to 1977. Some of her classmates at Juilliard included well-known actors like Kelsey Grammer and Robin Williams.

Frances Conroy started her acting career in the 1970s. She performed in many plays with different theater groups. One of her early important stage roles was Desdemona in Othello. She also appeared in a Woody Allen film called Manhattan in 1979.
In 1980, she made her first appearance on Broadway in a play called The Lady from Dubuque. For the next 20 years, she mostly focused on her stage work. She was also nominated four times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Along with the other actors in the show, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series twice. Television Roles (2005–2010)
After Six Feet Under, Frances Conroy continued to appear in many TV shows. In 2008, she had a guest role in Desperate Housewives. She also had a recurring role as Loretta Stinson, Barney Stinson's mother, in the popular comedy series How I Met Your Mother. In 2010, she voiced the character Angie Dinkley in the animated show Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
She also appeared in the movie Stone with Robert De Niro in 2010. That same year, she played Peggy Haplin in the TV series Happy Town.
American Horror Story and Recent Work (2011–2024)
In 2011, Frances Conroy joined the cast of the new FX drama series American Horror Story. In the first season, she played Moira O'Hara. The show is an anthology series, meaning each season tells a different story with new characters. For her role, she received another Emmy nomination.
She returned for the second season, Asylum, playing The Angel of Death. In 2013, she was a guest star on Royal Pains and played Maybelle Carter in the TV movie Ring of Fire.
Conroy became a regular cast member for the third season of American Horror Story, called Coven. She played Myrtle Snow, a member of a witches' council. This role earned her another Emmy nomination. She also appeared in the fourth season, Freak Show, as Gloria Mott. She later returned for Roanoke and American Horror Story: Cult.
In 2018, she returned to American Horror Story: Apocalypse, playing her previous characters Myrtle Snow and Moira O'Hara. In 2019, she co-starred in the film Joker, playing the mother of the main character.
She appeared again in the American Horror Story series in 2021 for American Horror Story: Double Feature. In the same year, she played Mrs. Burbank in the movie The Power of the Dog. For this role, she won a Satellite Award. In 2023, Conroy lent her voice to The Director in the animated movie Nimona.
Personal Life
Frances Conroy married Jonathan Furst in 1980, but they later divorced. In 1992, she married actor Jan Munroe.
She was in a car accident that caused damage to her right eye. After surgery, her eye changed color.
