Allen Kelsey Grammer (born February 21, 1955) is an American actor, comedian, and producer. He is famous for playing Dr. Frasier Crane, a psychiatrist, on the TV shows Cheers (from 1984 to 1993) and its spin-off Frasier (from 1993 to 2004, and again from 2023 to 2024). This role lasted over 20 years, making it one of the longest-running roles for an actor in primetime TV history.
Kelsey Grammer has won many awards for his acting. These include six Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Tony Award. He studied acting at the Juilliard School and the Old Globe Theatre. He started his acting career on Broadway in 1981 in the play Macbeth. He also acted in Othello and the musical Sunday in the Park with George.
You might also know him as Dr. Hank McCoy / Beast in the superhero films X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). He has also done a lot of voice acting. He voiced Vladimir in Anastasia (1997), Stinky Pete in Toy Story 2 (1999), and the very popular Sideshow Bob in The Simpsons (since 1990). In 2001, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Kelsey Grammer's Early Life and Education
Kelsey Grammer was born in Saint Thomas, which is in the U.S. Virgin Islands. His mother, Sally Cranmer, was a dancer. His father, Frank Allen Grammer Jr., was a musician. Kelsey has a younger sister, Karen, and four half-siblings.
Kelsey's childhood included many sad events. After his parents separated, he was raised by his mother and grandparents in New Jersey. The family later moved to Pompano Beach, Florida. When Kelsey was twelve, his grandfather passed away. Later, he also lost his sister and two half-brothers in separate tragic incidents. These events deeply affected him.
He went to Pine Crest School, a private school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, he discovered his love for singing and performing. He later earned a scholarship to study drama at the Juilliard School. However, after a difficult family event, he struggled to attend classes and left the school.
Kelsey Grammer has described himself as a "Caribbean kid." He still enjoys visiting places like the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Kelsey Grammer's Acting Career
Starting in Theatre and Early TV Roles (1977–1983)
After leaving Juilliard, Kelsey Grammer spent three years training at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. He also worked at the Guthrie Theater in Minnesota.
He made his first appearance on Broadway in 1981 in the play Macbeth. He then played Michael Cassio in Othello in 1982. In 1983, he performed in the musical Sunday in the Park with George.
Becoming Famous with Cheers (1984–1993)
In 1984, Kelsey Grammer first appeared as Dr. Frasier Crane in the TV show Cheers. He was only supposed to be in six episodes, but he became a regular cast member. His character, Frasier, appeared from the third season until the show ended in 1993.
Grammer also started voicing Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons in 1990. He even won an Emmy Award for his voice work on the show. Sideshow Bob has appeared in many episodes of The Simpsons over the years.
Stardom with Frasier (1993–2004)
In September 1993, Dr. Frasier Crane got his own TV show called Frasier. In this show, Frasier moves to Seattle and works as a radio psychiatrist. Kelsey Grammer not only starred in the show but also directed over 30 episodes. He also sang the show's famous closing theme song, "Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs."
Frasier was very successful and won many Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series. It won five times, which is a record! Kelsey Grammer himself was nominated for 10 Emmy Awards for his role in Frasier, winning four times. His 20-year run playing Dr. Frasier Crane on both Cheers and Frasier is one of the longest for a TV character. In 2021, it was announced that Grammer would play Frasier again in a new revival series on Paramount+.
During this time, Grammer also did more voice work. He voiced Vladimir in Anastasia (1997) and Stinky Pete in Pixar's Toy Story 2 (1999). He also voiced characters in other animated films like Barbie of Swan Lake and Teacher's Pet.
Recent Career (2005–Present)
In 2005, Kelsey Grammer produced a TV show called The Sketch Show. He also starred in other sitcoms like Back to You and Hank.
In 2010, Grammer returned to Broadway in the musical La Cage aux Folles. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance. From 2011 to 2012, he starred in the drama series Boss as a fictional mayor. He won a Golden Globe Award for this role.
In 2014, Grammer appeared in the sitcom Partners. He also starred in action films like The Expendables 3 and Transformers: Age of Extinction. He lent his voice to the documentary Best of Enemies in 2015.
In 2016, Grammer won a Tony Award as a producer for the musical The Color Purple. In 2019, he played Don Quixote in the musical Man of La Mancha in London. He also appeared in the Netflix film Like Father and the movie Grand Isle.
Most recently, Kelsey Grammer returned as Dr. Frasier Crane in the 2023 revival of Frasier on Paramount+. The show has been renewed for a second season.
Kelsey Grammer's Personal Life
Kelsey Grammer has been married four times and has seven children and one grandchild. His first marriage was to Doreen Alderman from 1982 to 1990. They have a daughter named Spencer Grammer (born in 1983), who is also an actress. Through Spencer, Kelsey has one grandson.
He also has a daughter named Kandace Greer Grammer (born in 1992) from a relationship with Barrie Buckner.
His second marriage was to Leigh-Anne Csuhany in 1992, which lasted about a year.
In 1997, Grammer married dancer and model Camille Donatacci. They have a daughter, Mason, and a son, Jude, both born through a surrogate mother. Their divorce was finalized in 2011.
In 2011, Kelsey Grammer married Kayte Walsh, an English flight attendant. They have a daughter and two sons together. In 2023, it was reported that Grammer bought a house in his wife's hometown in England.
Kelsey Grammer's Political Views
Kelsey Grammer supports the Republican Party. He has spoken about his support for ideas like small government and lower taxes. He is known as one of the few well-known Republicans in Hollywood.
He has also shared his thoughts on various topics, including climate change. He has expressed interest in possibly running for political office in the future, such as United States Congress or even president, but later said he was no longer interested. Grammer has supported several Republican candidates in past elections, including Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, and Donald Trump.
Health Challenges
Kelsey Grammer has faced some health challenges. In 2008, he had a heart attack while paddleboarding in Hawaii. He was discharged from the hospital a few days later and recovered. He later said that the heart attack was more serious than initially reported. He believed that the stress of his TV show Back to You being cancelled might have contributed to his health problems.
Grammer has said that his faith has helped him deal with personal difficulties throughout his life.

Awards and Nominations
Kelsey Grammer has won many awards, especially for his work on Frasier. He was the first American actor to be nominated for multiple Emmy awards for playing the same character on three different TV shows: Cheers, Frasier, and Wings.
In 2010, Grammer was nominated for his first Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in La Cage Aux Folles. He later won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 2016 as a producer for The Color Purple.
On May 22, 2001, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his television work. He has also received nine nominations and won three Golden Globes.
