Monsters University is a fun computer-animated comedy movie from 2013. It tells the story of what happened before the first movie, Monsters, Inc.. This film shows us how Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sulley" Sullivan met in college. At first, they weren't friends at all! The movie was directed by Dan Scanlon. Famous actors like Billy Crystal (as Mike), John Goodman (as Sulley), and Steve Buscemi (as Randall) lent their voices to the characters again.

Main Characters and Voice Actors

Many talented actors gave their voices to the monsters in this movie. Here are some of the main characters you'll meet:

  • Billy Crystal as Michael "Mike" Wazowski: A small, green, one-eyed monster who dreams of becoming a top scarer.
    • Noah Johnston as Young Mike: The younger version of Mike.
  • John Goodman as James P. "Sulley" Sullivan: A large, furry, blue monster from a famous scaring family.
  • Steve Buscemi as Randall "Randy" Boggs: A chameleon-like monster who can change his color.
  • Helen Mirren as Dean Hardscrabble: The strict and respected head of the Scaring School at Monsters University.
  • Nathan Fillion as Johnny Worthington: The confident leader of the top fraternity, Roar Omega Roar.
  • Joel Murray as Don Carlton: An older, friendly monster who joins Mike and Sulley's fraternity, Oozma Kappa.
  • Peter Sohn as Scott "Squishy" Squibbles: A shy, five-eyed monster who is also part of Oozma Kappa.
  • Charlie Day as Art: A mysterious and free-spirited monster in Oozma Kappa.
  • Sean Hayes as Terri Perry and Dave Foley as Terry Perry: Two-headed monster brothers who are also in Oozma Kappa.
  • Bonnie Hunt as Karen Graves: Mike's kind teacher from elementary school.
  • John Ratzenberger as Abominable Snowman: A familiar character from the Monsters, Inc. world.

How the Movie Was Made

A second movie for Monsters, Inc. was thought about for a long time. In 2010, Pixar officially announced they would make a new Monsters, Inc. movie.

From Sequel to Prequel

The movie was first planned to be a direct sequel. It was even going to be called Monsters, Inc. 2: Lost in Scaradise. The idea was that Mike and Sulley would visit the human world to give Boo a birthday present. But they would get lost and have to find their way back.

However, in early 2011, there were rumors that the movie would be a prequel instead. This meant it would show what happened before the first movie. On March 29, 2011, it was confirmed! The new title was Monsters University.

Release Date Changes

The movie's release date changed a few times. It was first set for November 16, 2012. Then it moved to November 2, 2012. Finally, it was pushed back to June 21, 2013. This was because Pixar movies released in the summer often do very well.

Voice Actors Return

It was also announced that John Goodman, Billy Crystal, and Steve Buscemi would return to voice Sulley, Mike, and Randall. Billy Crystal said he had a lot of fun recording his lines. He described the script as "really great" and "hilarious." He also shared a funny detail: Mike wears a retainer in college!
