About Joel Murray
Early Life and Family
Joel Murray grew up in Wilmette, Illinois. His mother was Lucille Collins, and his father was Edward Joseph Murray II. Edward worked as a lumber salesman. Joel comes from a large Irish family.
He is one of nine children. His older brothers are also well-known actors: Bill Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray, and John Murray. His sister, Nancy, is a nun who traveled the U.S. acting as St. Catherine of Siena. Joel's father passed away when Joel was young.
School and Early Acting
When Joel was in high school at Loyola Academy, he was the captain of the football team. He also loved acting and was the main actor in one of the school's musicals.
Joel started his acting career in Chicago, Illinois. He performed at many improv theaters. These included the Improv Olympic and The Second City. Improv is a type of acting where you make up scenes on the spot.
Voice Acting and TV Roles
From 1986 to 1997, Joel Murray was the voice of Cheetos mascot Chester Cheetah. Many people know this cool cartoon character.
In 1989, Joel performed in a show called The Gods Must Be Lazy at Second City. He then starred in several TV comedy series. These included Grand in 1990 and Pacific Station in 1991. He also played Ray Litvak in Love & War starting in 1992.
Later, he joined the ABC show Dharma & Greg as Pete Cavanaugh. He also voiced characters in animated shows like Beethoven and 3-South. Joel played Fitz in the CBS show Still Standing. In 2011, he appeared as Eddie Jackson in the Showtime series Shameless.

Joel Murray's first movie role was in the 1986 comedy One Crazy Summer. He played a character named George Calamari. He also appeared in the 1988 movie Scrooged with his brothers Bill, Brian, and John. In 1992, he was in Shakes the Clown.
Joel had a regular role in the TV series Mad Men. He played a copywriter named Freddy Rumsen in 15 episodes. He also made guest appearances on many other TV shows. These include The Nanny, Two and a Half Men, and Criminal Minds.
In the 2012 film God Bless America, Joel played the main character, Frank. In the 2013 Pixar animated movie Monsters University, he voiced Don Carlton. Don Carlton is a friendly, middle-aged monster who is a college student.
In 2014, Joel joined the improv-comedy group Whose Live Anyway?. He performs with actors from Whose Line Is It Anyway?. He also played Ted in the comedy horror film Bloodsucking Bastards.
Personal Life
Joel Murray married Eliza Coyle in 1989. They have four children together.
Joel and his brothers own a restaurant called Murray Brothers "Caddyshack." It's a country club-themed restaurant named after the 1980 comedy movie Caddyshack. That movie starred his brothers Bill and Brian. The first restaurant is in St. Augustine, Florida. In 2018, they opened a second location in Rosemont, Illinois.
