After leaving high school, Dave Foley tried stand-up comedy. He spent about a year at the Toronto Second City Training Centre. There, he started taking improv classes. He met Kevin McDonald there, who helped him get a job as an usher.

In 1984, Foley, McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson formed The Kids in the Hall. Their TV show, The Kids in the Hall, started in 1988. It ran until 1995. Dave played many funny characters on the show. These included Hecubus, one of the Sizzler sisters, and Mr. Heavyfoot.

Foley later joined the cast of the TV show NewsRadio. The show's creator, Paul Simms, was a big fan of Dave's work. He wrote the role of Dave Nelson especially for him. Many of Dave's own habits, like his love for coffee, were used in his character.

In 1999, Dave played Troy in the movie Blast from the Past. He was also reunited with NewsRadio writer Joe Furey. Dave recorded a special featurette called Working with Joe Furey. In January 2013, Foley released his own stand-up comedy special, Relatively Well.
