Kevin McDonald was born in Montréal, Québec, Canada. His parents were Sheila and Hamilton McDonald, and he has a younger sister named Sandra. When he was seven, his family moved to Los Angeles, California. They later lived in Toronto, Ontario.
McDonald studied acting for a short time at a community college. One of his teachers, William B. Davis (who played the Cigarette Smoking Man in The X-Files), saw his talent for comedy. He encouraged McDonald to try improv comedy and gave him the phone number for The Second City comedy theater in Toronto. This advice helped launch his comedy career.
