Lilo & Stitch (franchise) facts for kids
Lilo & Stitch, also known as just Stitch, is a popular Disney story series that started in 2002. It all began with an animated movie created by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. This first movie was a big hit, which led to many more adventures!
The Lilo & Stitch world includes three more movies, a short film, three animated TV shows, lots of video games, fun rides at theme parks, and toys.
The main characters are a unique pair: Lilo Pelekai, a Hawaiian girl who is a bit of an outcast, and Stitch, a super strong alien creature. Stitch was originally called Experiment 626 and was made by a mad scientist alien named Dr. Jumba Jookiba to cause trouble. But Lilo teaches Stitch about ohana, which means family, and he learns to be good.
Their ohana includes Lilo's older sister Nani, Jumba, and Jumba's funny partner, Agent Pleakley. Many other alien experiments, who Stitch calls his "cousins," also join their family in the later stories. The movies and first TV show often featured music and ideas from the famous singer Elvis Presley, who was very popular in Hawaii.
Later stories, like the Japanese cartoon Stitch! and the Chinese cartoon Stitch & Ai, show Stitch in different parts of the world without Lilo. He meets new human friends who take him, Jumba, and Pleakley into their families. These shows were made by different teams and have different voice actors for Stitch and Jumba. There's also a new live-action movie of Lilo & Stitch being made!

The Main Story
Lilo & Stitch (2002)
This is where it all begins! An alien mad scientist named Dr. Jumba Jookiba is on trial for making dangerous creatures. His newest creation is Experiment 626, a small blue alien with four arms and super strength. 626 is sent away, and Jumba is put in jail. But 626 escapes, steals a spaceship, and crashes on Earth. Jumba is sent to get him back, along with Agent Pleakley, who is supposed to keep an eye on Jumba.
626 pretends to be a dog and is adopted by a lonely girl named Lilo Pelekai. Lilo lives with her 19-year-old sister Nani. Lilo names her new friend "Stitch."
Stitch! The Movie (2003)
In this movie, the bad guy Dr. Hämsterviel hires Ex-Captain Gantu to find the other 625 alien experiments. Back on Earth, Stitch is still having trouble fitting in. But when Experiment 221, an electric alien, causes trouble, Lilo and Stitch team up to stop him. Gantu also gets a new helper, Experiment 625, who loves sandwiches and is a bit lazy.
Lilo & Stitch: The Series (2003–2006)
This TV show continues the story from Stitch! The Movie. Lilo and Stitch are given a big job: to find all of Jumba's missing experiments, turn them from bad to good, and help them find a place where they belong. Meanwhile, Gantu and Experiment 625 are still trying to capture the experiments for Dr. Hämsterviel.
The show had 65 episodes and ended with the TV movie Leroy & Stitch.
Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005)
This movie takes place between the first film and Stitch! The Movie. Lilo is getting ready for a hula dance competition. But Stitch starts having problems because Jumba didn't fully charge his molecules when he was created. This "glitch" makes Stitch act destructive again, and it could even destroy him if Jumba can't fix it in time.
The Origin of Stitch (2005)
This short film was included on the Lilo & Stitch 2 DVD. It shows Stitch finding Jumba's computer and getting scared about what a monster he used to be. Jumba then explains how Stitch found family and love with Lilo. It also hints at the other experiments.
Leroy & Stitch (2006)
After three years, Lilo and Stitch have found all 624 experiments! They are honored as heroes by the Galactic Alliance. Stitch and his friends decide to follow their dreams, but then Gantu frees Hämsterviel from prison. They create a new, super-strong experiment named Leroy. Lilo and Stitch must bring all the experiments together to fight Leroy and his many clones!
Spin-offs Without Lilo
"Stitch Meets High School Musical" (2007)
In this short cartoon, Stitch and other Lilo & Stitch characters play basketball and dance to a song from High School Musical. It first aired in Japan and was later released on a High School Musical 2 DVD.
Stitch! (2008–2015)
This Japanese cartoon series features a girl named Yuna Kamihara instead of Lilo. It's set on a fictional island near Okinawa, Japan. The story takes place years after Leroy & Stitch. Stitch has left Lilo because she went to college. He meets Yuna, a tomboy who practices karate. Jumba and Pleakley later join Stitch, and they all live with Yuna's family.
In the first two seasons, Stitch tries to do 43 good deeds to get a wish granted, hoping to become the strongest being in the universe. Meanwhile, Hämsterviel, Gantu, and Experiment 625 (Reuben) try to stop him. By the end of the second season, Stitch realizes that living with Yuna is better than being the strongest.
In the third season, Yuna, Stitch, and the aliens move to a new city. Hämsterviel teams up with an alien woman named Delia, who wants to get a special power cell from Stitch. Lilo even returns for a short visit with Stitch in one episode!
Stitch & Ai (2017)
This Chinese animated series takes place in Huangshan, China. It stars Stitch and a local girl named Wang Ai Ling. This series is set after Leroy & Stitch but in a different timeline than the Japanese Stitch! show.
Stitch escapes from space criminals who want to use him for bad things. He lands in the Huangshan mountains and meets Ai. Ai's aunt wants her to move to the city. Stitch joins Ai's family as her new "dog," and Jumba and Pleakley also arrive. Stitch helps Ai stay in the mountains, and she helps him fight off the space gangs. Jumba worries that a secret power he gave Stitch, which can turn him into a giant monster, might be triggered by the criminals.
Live-Action Movie
Walt Disney Pictures is making a live-action version of the original Lilo & Stitch movie. It will be released on Disney+. Chris Sanders, who voiced Stitch in the original, will voice him again. The movie will be filmed in Hawaii.
