Althea Rae Duhinio Janairo (born January 2, 1967), known as Tia Carrere, is an American actress and singer. She became famous for her roles in movies like Wayne's World and for voicing characters in animated films such as Lilo & Stitch. Tia Carrere has also won two Grammy Awards for her music.

Early Life and First Steps to Fame
Tia Carrere was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents are Audrey Lee Janairo and Alexander Janairo. She has a mixed background, including Filipino, Chinese, and some Spanish heritage.
As a child, Tia went to Sacred Hearts Academy, an all-girls school. She always dreamed of becoming a singer. When she was 18, she appeared on the TV show Star Search. Even though she didn't win, a local producer saw her in a grocery store in Waikiki. This led to her first movie role in Aloha Summer. Around this time, she chose her stage name "Tia Carrere." "Tia" was her sister's nickname for her, and "Carrere" was a tribute to actress Barbara Carrera.
Becoming a Star: Film and TV Roles
After her first movie, Tia Carrere moved to Los Angeles. She worked as a model before getting her first TV role in 1985 on Airwolf. Her big break came when she joined the soap opera General Hospital from 1985 to 1987. She also made guest appearances on popular shows like The A-Team and MacGyver.
Her most famous role came in 1992 as Cassandra Wong in the movie Wayne's World. She played a rock singer and the love interest of Wayne Campbell, played by Mike Myers. She sang all her own songs in the film, and her vocals are on the Wayne's World soundtrack. She returned as Cassandra in Wayne's World 2 the next year. In 1992, People magazine even named her one of the "50 most beautiful people."
Tia Carrere also appeared in other big films. She played Juno Skinner in the 1994 action movie True Lies, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. She was also in Rising Sun with Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. From 1999 to 2002, she starred as archeology professor Sydney Fox in the TV series Relic Hunter. This show was similar to Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider.
Tia Carrere is also well-known for her voice acting. She voiced Nani, Lilo's older sister, in the animated movie Lilo & Stitch (2002) and its TV show. She also voiced Queen Tyr'ahnee in the Duck Dodgers animated series.
She competed on the reality show Dancing with the Stars in its second season, finishing in sixth place. Later, she also appeared on The Celebrity Apprentice. In 2020, she played Lady Danger in the Netflix series AJ and the Queen.
A Talented Singer
Besides acting, Tia Carrere has a successful singing career. In 1993, her first solo album, Dream, became very popular in the Philippines. She also sang the ending theme, "I Never Even Told You," for the movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
Later, she started focusing on Hawaiian music. Her album Hawaiiana (2007) was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hawaiian Music Album. She won her first Grammy Award in 2009 for her album 'Ikena. Her 2010 album He Nani was also nominated for a Grammy. In 2011, she won her second Grammy Award for her album Huana Ke Aloha.
Personal Life
Tia Carrere has been married twice. She married film producer Elie Samaha in 1992, and they divorced in 2000. In 2002, she married photojournalist Simon Wakelin. They have one daughter, Bianca. They divorced in 2010 and share custody of their daughter. Tia Carrere lives in Los Angeles.
