In 1988, while still working as a nurse, Bonnie auditioned for a movie role during her lunch break. She got the part of Sally Dibbs, a waitress, in the movie Rain Man. This was her big break into acting!
Bonnie's Acting Career
In 1990, Bonnie played Carol Anne Smithson in the TV show Grand. She was even offered a spot on Saturday Night Live. However, she turned it down because she preferred her own style of improvisational comedy.
In 1993, Bonnie worked with her friend, TV host David Letterman. They created a TV show called The Building. This show was filmed live, and they often left in mistakes or forgotten lines. This made the show feel very real and funny. In 1995, they worked together again on The Bonnie Hunt Show (later called Bonnie). It had a similar relaxed style.
In 2002, Bonnie returned to TV with Life with Bonnie. Her role on this show earned her an Emmy nomination in 2004. Even though the show was popular, it was canceled after two seasons.
Bonnie also directed, co-wrote, and co-starred in the movie Return to Me. This film was shot in her old neighborhood in Chicago. Many of her family members even had small roles in it. The movie was inspired by her own childhood.
You've probably seen Bonnie in many movies. She played Alice Newton in Beethoven and Beethoven's 2nd. She was Sarah Whittle in Jumanji. She also played Kate Baker in Cheaper by the Dozen and its sequel.

It also had pictures of Bonnie's family. The show was like Live with Regis and Kelly, where the host and guests often talked with the audience. Many of the people working on the show were Bonnie's old friends from Chicago.
The show usually started with a funny opening speech. Then, Bonnie would interview guests and play games with the audience. Her mother, Alice, often appeared in online videos from her home. The Bonnie Hunt Show was filmed in California. It was nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards in its first year. It won the Gracie Award for "Outstanding Talk Show" in 2009.
