The Quadling Country is the southern part of the amazing Land of Oz, created by L. Frank Baum. It first appeared in his book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900. This area is known for the color red, which is worn by most of its people, called Quadlings. Even their surroundings are often red!
Just like the Munchkin Country, the outer parts of Quadling Country are lovely and peaceful. Kind and friendly people live there. But as you get closer to the Emerald City, the areas become more dangerous. These include places near the mountains of the Hammer-Heads, the Dainty China Country, and the Forest of the Fighting Trees.

Exploring Quadling Country
Quadling Country is full of unique places, creatures, and sights, just like other parts of Oz. Let's explore some of them!
Places from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
- The Palace of Glinda the Good Witch - This is the home of Glinda, who is also known as the Good Witch of the South.
- The Forest of the Fighting Trees - In this forest, the trees at the northern edge can move their branches. They will throw away anyone who tries to enter!
- The Dainty China Country - Imagine a place where everyone and everything is made of delicate china! That's this country.
- Mountain of the Hammer-Heads - These hills are home to the Hammer-Heads, who are armless but have hard, flat heads they use to attack.
- Unnamed Forest - In one forest, the animals were being scared by a giant spider. When the Cowardly Lion defeated it, they made him their king!
Places from The Emerald City of Oz
- Miss Cuttenclip - This is a little girl who cuts paper dolls from special, living paper. These paper dolls, called Cuttenclips, live in Cuttenclip Village. Walls protect their village from the wind.
- Fuddlecumjig - This village is home to the Fuddles. They are made from puzzle pieces and often need to be put back together!
- Utensia - A kingdom where all the utensils are alive and can move around.
- Bunbury - This land is hidden in a forest. All its people are animated baked goods, like breads, buns, muffins, and cakes. The trees here even grow "dough-nuts"!
- Bunnybury - Also hidden in the same forest, Bunnybury is where smart and polite rabbits live. They walk on two legs and wear clothes! Glinda created this place because she loves rabbits.
- Rigmarole Town - This is one of Oz's special "Defensive Settlements." The Rigmaroles live here so they don't bother other people.
- Flutterbudget Center - Another Defensive Settlement, located near the border with Winkie Country. All the Flutterbudgets from Oz live here to keep their constant worrying from affecting others.
Places from The Patchwork Girl of Oz
- Mister Yoop - A giant who is kept captive because he is untamed.
- The Hoppers - A group of cave dwellers who have only one leg and travel by hopping.
- The Horners - Strange creatures that have a single horn on their heads.
- Trick River - This river flows through Quadling Country and can change its direction of flow! It runs between Winkie Country and the mountain where the Hoppers and Horners live.
Places from The Scarecrow of Oz
- Jinxland - A kingdom separated from the rest of Quadling Country by a deep gorge.
- Great Waterfall - The tallest waterfall in all of Oz.
Places from Grampa in Oz
- Ragbad - This is the home of King Fumbo, Queen Sew-and-Sew, and their son Prince Tatters. They grow textiles (materials for clothes) as their main business.

- Chimneyville - A city where the people are made of smoke, and the city itself is made of chimneys!
- Soot City - This city is located right underneath Chimneyville.
- Goody Shop - A store in the northern part of Quadling Country. An old woman runs it, selling "good" things like Good Advice and Good Manners. She doesn't take money and thinks "buy" means "bye"!

- Swing City - A city made up of nets and trapezes, perfect for swinging!
Quadling Country in Other Stories
In some newer books about Oz, like Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Quadling Country is shown as a wild, swampy area. The Quadlings are described as artistic people with reddish faces. It's also mentioned that they are seen as the lowest group of humans in Oz.
The capital city, Qhoyre, is made of red stones and has tall balconies. Its people have red skin and drink red mint tea. The Quadlings themselves say their home is "poor but incredibly beautiful." A river called Waterslip connects Qhoyre to Ovvels, a village built in trees above the swamps. These swamps hide rubies and unique animals.
In the movie , the Quadlings are part of Glinda's kingdom. They are kind, simple farmers who don't have much fighting experience. Still, they joined Glinda's army to fight against the Wicked Witch of the East. In the movie, they don't show a strong preference for the color red. Part of the Dainty China Country also appears, but it has been damaged by the Wicked Witch of the East's flying baboons. China Girl is the only survivor from that area.
