Dharwad peda (pronounced Dhar-wad Pay-da) is a special Indian sweet from the state of Karnataka, India. It gets its name from the city of Dharwad, where it was first made. This delicious sweet has a long history, going back about 175 years! Dharwad peda is so unique that it has a special "Geographical Indication" (GI) tag. This tag means the sweet is famous for coming from a specific place. Its GI tag number is 80.

The Story Behind Dharwad Peda
Dharwad peda was first created by the Thakur family. They moved to Dharwad from a place called Unnao in Uttar Pradesh during the early 1800s. They left Unnao because a serious sickness, like a very bad flu, was spreading there.
How the Sweet Started
Ram Ratan Singh Thakur was the first person in his family to make sweets. He started making and selling pedas in Dharwad. The original Dharwad peda was made using milk from special buffaloes. These buffaloes were raised by the Gavali community in and around Dharwad.
Ram Ratan Singh's grandson, Babu Singh Thakur, helped the family business grow even more. Their shop was in an area called Line Bazaar. Because of this, the peda also became known as the "Line Bazaar Peda." The Thakur family keeps the recipe for this sweet a secret. They pass it down from one generation to the next.
Growing the Business
For many years, Babusingh Thakur had just one shop. But over time, his business expanded. Today, you can find their shops in other cities like Hubli, Bangalore, Belgaum, and Haveri. While other sweet shops in India might sell "Dharwad peda," they are not connected to the original Thakur family.
