How the Festival Started
The Toadies Band: A Quick Look
The Toadies are a rock band from Texas. They became very popular in 1994. This was when their first album, Rubberneck, came out. It sold over a million copies! Their song "Possum Kingdom" was a big hit. It was named after Possum Kingdom Lake near Fort Worth, Texas.
After a few years, the band took a break in 2001. But they got back together in 2008. They released a new album called No Deliverance. They also planned a new tour.
Why the Toadies Created Their Own Festival
While planning their tour, the Toadies learned something cool. Many people wanted them to play at music festivals in Texas. Instead of just playing at other festivals, the band had a new idea. They decided to create their very own festival!
They were inspired by Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic. So, they started the "first annual" Dia De Los Toadies. It happened on August 31, 2008. The festival took place right on the shore of Possum Kingdom Lake.
The band chose the name "Dia De Los Toadies" carefully. It means "Day of the Toadies." This name was not tied to one place. This meant they could move the festival to different cities each year.
Who Plays at the Festival?
The festival often features many bands from Texas. For the first four years, only Texas bands played there. Vaden Todd Lewis, the Toadies' lead singer, said their goal was to "highlight Texas bands."
Many great Texas performers have played at Dia De Los Toadies. Some of these include Bowling for Soup, The Old 97's, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, and Gary Clark, Jr..
Growing Bigger Every Year
The first Dia De Los Toadies festival was a huge success. Over 5,000 people came to enjoy the music! In its second year (2009), the festival moved to Glen Rose. It was still a one-day event.
In 2010, the festival grew even more. It became a two-day event! From 2010 to 2012, it was held at the WhiteWater Amphitheater. This is a large outdoor venue in New Braunfels. It can hold 5,500 people. In 2013, the festival moved to Panther Island Pavilion in Fort Worth.
On January 27, 2016, the Toadies announced the ninth festival. It was held on June 11, 2016, back in New Braunfels. The Toadies and The Reverend Horton Heat were the main bands. Other Texas artists like Purple and Emily Wolfe also played.
