About the Festival
How it Started
The band Toadies is from Texas. They play alternative rock music. In 1994, they became very popular. This happened when they released their first album, Rubberneck. This album sold over one million copies, making it "platinum-selling." One of their famous songs was Possum Kingdom. It was named after Possum Kingdom Lake near Fort Worth, Texas.
After a few years, the band broke up in 2001. They got back together in 2008. They released a new album called No Deliverance. They also planned a new tour. During this time, they learned that many fans wanted them to play at music festivals in Texas.
The Toadies decided to start their own festival. They were inspired by Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic. The first Dia De Los Toadies was held on August 31, 2008. It took place on the shore of Possum Kingdom Lake. The band chose the name "Dia De Los Toadies" because it meant they could move the festival to different places each year.
Festival Growth and Performers
The festival usually featured many bands from Texas. For the first four years, only Texas bands played. Vaden Todd Lewis, the lead singer of Toadies, said the goal was "to highlight Texas bands." Many well-known Texas artists played at the festival. These included Bowling for Soup, The Old 97's, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, and Gary Clark, Jr..
Over 5,000 people attended the first festival. In 2009, the festival moved to Glen Rose, Texas. It was still a one-day event. From 2010 to 2012, it grew to two days. It was held at the WhiteWater Amphitheater in New Braunfels. This venue could hold 5,500 people. In 2013, the festival moved to Panther Island Pavilion in Fort Worth.
The ninth festival happened on June 11, 2016. It was held in New Braunfels, Texas. The Toadies and The Reverend Horton Heat were the main bands. Other Texas artists like Purple and Emily Wolfe also played. The festival ended in 2017.
