Diane Birch (born January 24, 1983) is a talented American singer and songwriter. She is known for her soulful voice and amazing piano skills.
Growing Up and Music
Diane was born in Michigan. When she was seven, she started learning piano using the Suzuki method. This method helps kids learn music by listening and repeating, much like they learn to speak. Growing up, Diane listened to many different kinds of music. These included opera, classical, and church songs.
Her father was a missionary. This meant Diane spent her early years living in other countries. She lived in places like Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Sydney, Australia. When she was ten, her family moved back to the United States. They settled in Portland, Oregon. Diane went to school there, attending Portland Adventist Elementary School and later Portland Adventist Academy.
Starting Her Music Journey
After finishing school, Diane moved to Los Angeles. She hoped to write music for movies. Instead, she found herself playing piano at famous hotels. One day in 2006, the famous musician Prince heard her play! He was so impressed that he invited her to his home for a music session.
Later, Diane moved to London, England. There, she signed a contract to write songs. She wrote many of the songs for her first album while living there.
First Album Success
In 2007, Diane moved to New York City. She signed with a record label called S-Curve Records. Her first album, called Bible Belt, came out in 2009. It was recorded in New York and New Orleans. The album received great reviews from magazines like Rolling Stone.
To help promote Bible Belt, Diane appeared on many TV shows in 2009. She performed on shows like Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. She also shared her songs on National Public Radio.
One of her songs, "Rise Up," was chosen as the Starbucks iTunes Pick of the Week. Another song, "Valentino," was featured in the movie Valentine's Day.
Concerts and New Music
In 2010, Diane had the amazing chance to open for Stevie Wonder. This was at the "Hard Rock Calling Festival" in Hyde Park. She also opened for Nick Jonas and the Administration. In December of that year, Diane released an EP (which is like a mini-album) called The Velveteen Age. On this EP, she sang cover versions of songs she loved when she was younger.
In 2013, Diane was featured on a song called "Rewind" by English rapper Devlin. She sang the chorus, which was based on her original song from Bible Belt.
Besides piano, Diane also plays the guitar and the violin. Her second album, Speak a Little Louder, was released in October 2013.
In 2016, Diane released her first self-produced mini-album, Nous. She recorded this EP in Berlin, Germany. Her third studio album, Flying on Abraham, was released in April 2024.
