Diane Sommerfield (born Diane Yvonne Young; October 24, 1949 – March 9, 2001) was an American actress. She appeared in plays, movies, and TV shows. Her acting career lasted from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. Diane Sommerfield was most famous for playing Valerie Grant on the TV show Days of Our Lives. This popular show was on NBC from 1981 to 1982.

Early Life and Education
Diane Yvonne Young was born in Washington, D.C.. She started acting when she was a child. She performed in plays in her hometown. Later, she went to Calvin Coolidge High School. There, she played the main characters in school plays.
Diane then attended Howard University for her first years of college. During this time, she acted in a play called "Satyricon." This play was part of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada. In her third year of college, Diane moved to Los Angeles. She transferred to the California State University, Los Angeles. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Theater in 1971.
Acting on Screen
From 1971 to 1986, Diane Sommerfield acted in many movies and TV shows. Some of her well-known films include The Black Godfather (1974) and Roll, Freddy, Roll! (1974). She also appeared in Blackjack (1978) and Love in a Taxi (1980). Later, she was in Back Roads (1981) and The Night Stalker (1987).
In 1986, Diane returned to Washington, D.C. She went to the University of the District of Columbia to study film. From 1997 to 1999, she volunteered as an acting teacher. She taught at her old high school. Diane Sommerfield passed away on March 9, 2001, at the age of 51.
