Richard L. Arrington (born January 16, 1942 – died March 14, 1993) was an amazing American football player. He played as a guard for the famous Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. He was even named an All-American in 1965, which means he was one of the best college players in the country!

Early Life

Dick Arrington was born in Kiln, Mississippi in 1942. Later, his family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania. He went to Erie East High School and graduated from there.

Playing Career at Notre Dame

Arrington played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. He played under coach Joe Kuharich in 1963. Then, he played for coach Ara Parseghian in 1964 and 1965.

In 1964, Dick was a starting player on the offensive line. He helped his teammate, John Huarte, win the Heisman Trophy. This award goes to the most outstanding player in college football.

During the 1965 season, Dick had to play both offense and defense. This happened when another player, Kevin Hardy, got injured. After his senior year, Dick was recognized as a first-team All-American. This means many sports groups chose him as one of the top players.

All-American in Two Sports

Dick Arrington was not just great at football. He was also an amazing wrestler! In 1965, he placed third in the NCAA wrestling tournament. This earned him All-American honors in wrestling too.

He is one of only four Notre Dame athletes to be an All-American in two different sports. The others are Bob Golic, Raghib Ismail, and Edward "Moose" Krause.

After College Football

After college, Dick Arrington was chosen by the Cleveland Browns in the 1965 NFL Draft. But instead, he decided to sign a contract with the Boston Patriots. They were part of the American Football League at the time.

After his football career, Dick worked in government. He held several important jobs in Boston and Massachusetts. He was a commissioner for the Boston Licensing Board. He also worked as a probation officer and a deputy tax collector.

Dick Arrington passed away on March 14, 1993, at the age of 51. He died from a heart attack at his home in the Roxbury area of Boston.
