Dick Leslie Dearden (born June 3, 1938, died November 2, 2019) was an American politician. He was a State Senator for Iowa. A member of the Democratic Party, he worked in the Iowa Senate from 1995 to 2017. He represented parts of Des Moines and Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
His Early Life and School
Dick Dearden went to school in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Des Moines East High School.
What He Did in Politics
As a State Senator, Dick Dearden worked on many important groups called committees. These groups helped make decisions and laws for Iowa. He was the leader (chair) of the Natural Resources committee. He was also the vice chair of the Ethics committee.
Before becoming a State Senator, he was involved in politics for a long time. He served on the Polk County Central Committee starting in 1972. He was also the chairman of the Polk County Democrats from 1980 to 1982. In 1996, he was a delegate at the 1996 Democratic National Convention.
In 2008, he was re-elected as a State Senator. He won with 17,704 votes. He defeated his opponent, Scott Strosahl, who was a Republican.
His Family Life
Dick Dearden married his wife, Sharon, in 1959. They had three children together. Their two sons were named David and Mark. Their daughter was named Pamela.
Dick Dearden also served in the National Guard. He passed away on November 2, 2019, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was 81 years old.
