Richard W. Hinch (born May 1, 1949 – died December 9, 2020) was an American politician. He was a member of the Republican Party. From 2008 until his death in 2020, he served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He became the Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in December 2020. Sadly, he passed away from COVID-19 just one week after becoming Speaker.
Early Life and Education
Dick Hinch was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He served in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1972. After his military service, he went to Salem State University.
Political Career
Before becoming a politician, Mr. Hinch worked in real estate in Merrimack, New Hampshire. In 2008, he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He represented the Hillsborough 21 district.
From 2015 to 2018, he was the Majority Leader of the House. This meant he helped lead the main political party in the House. Then, from 2018 to 2020, he served as the Minority Leader. In this role, he led the party that was not in control.
Mr. Hinch had specific ideas about laws. In 2019, he did not support a law for paid family leave. This law would have given parents time off work to care for a new baby or sick family member, while still getting paid. He also supported school choice. This idea would give money to parents to help pay for private school or homeschooling.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there was a meeting of Republican House members. This meeting was held indoors at a ski area. After the meeting, some lawmakers tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. This caused some debate among politicians.
On December 2, 2020, Dick Hinch was officially chosen as the Speaker. He was sworn into office at an outdoor event.
Death
Dick Hinch died from COVID-19 at his home. This happened on December 9, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in New Hampshire. He was 71 years old. After his death, his deputy, Sherman Packard, became the new Speaker.
