Dieciocho de Julio (also known as 18 de Julio) is a small town located in the southeastern part of Uruguay, within the Rocha Department. It is known for its interesting history and a famous old fort.

Where is Dieciocho de Julio?
This town is found about 9 kilometers (about 5.6 miles) west of Chuy. It sits along Route 19, which is an important road in the area. The next small village to its west is called San Luis al Medio.
A Look at the Town's History
The area where Dieciocho de Julio is now was first known as "San Miguel." On June 12, 1909, a special law (Ley N° 3.495) officially renamed it. It was also declared a "Pueblo," which means a village. Later, on June 20, 1961, its status was upgraded. Another law (Ley Nº 12.876) changed it from a village to a "Villa," which means a town.

What to See in Town
One of the special places in Dieciocho de Julio is the Fortin de San Miguel. This old castle has been turned into a cozy inn and hotel. It's a unique place to visit or even stay!
The Famous Fuerte San Miguel
At the eastern edge of the town, there's a hill. On top of this hill stands the Fuerte San Miguel. This fort was very important during the time when different countries were trying to control the land. The Portuguese built it way back in 1737.
Between the fort and the main part of the town, you can find the Criollo Museum. This museum has outdoor displays that show what life was like for the gauchos. Gauchos were skilled horsemen, similar to cowboys. Inside the museum, you can see old carts and carriages from the past.
