Diego Matias Hypólito is a famous Brazilian gymnast. He was born on June 19, 1986. Diego is best known for his amazing skills on the floor exercise. He became a World Champion in this event in 2005 and again in 2007.

Diego Hypólito made history as the first male gymnast from Brazil and South America to win a medal at the World Championships. He has also won many medals in the World Cup, totaling 63! He represented Brazil in the Olympic Games in 2008, 2012, and 2016. At the 2016 Olympic Games, he won a silver medal in the floor exercise.

Diego is the brother of Daniele Hypólito, who was also a very successful gymnast. Daniele was the first Brazilian gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships.

Early Life and Family

Diego Hypólito was born in Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil. Later, his family moved to Rio de Janeiro. His father, Wagner Hypólito, was a bus driver, and his mother, Geni Matias, was a seamstress.

Diego has family roots from Greece through his father's side. His last name, Hypólito, comes from an old Greek name. He also has Portuguese family history from his mother's side.

Starting Gymnastics

When Diego was a child, he first tried gymnastics at the Flamengo Rowing Club. This was the same club where his older sister, Daniele, trained. Daniele encouraged him to focus on floor exercises. This is where he started winning his first titles as a young gymnast.

Gymnastics Career Highlights

Diego Hypólito started gymnastics when he was seven years old. He followed in his older sister's footsteps. In 1997, he won the floor exercise at the Brazilian National Championships in the children's group. In 2001, he became the all-around junior national champion.

World Championships Success

By the time he was 21, Diego had competed in many World Championships. These included the events in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. He was especially good at the floor exercise. He made it to the finals for this event in all five competitions.

  • In 2002, he finished fifth.
  • In 2003, he placed fourth.
  • In 2005, he won a gold medal.
  • In 2006, he earned a silver medal.
  • In 2007, he won another gold medal.

His gold medal win in 2005 was a big moment. It made him the first male gymnast from South America to win a medal at the World Championships.

Olympic Games Journey

In 2008, Diego faced a challenge when he got dengue fever. But he recovered quickly and was able to compete at the Beijing Olympics. He was the only male artistic gymnast representing Brazil there. He performed very well in the qualifying rounds for the floor exercise. However, in the final, he had a fall and finished in sixth place.

For the 2012 London Olympics, Diego was one of three Brazilian male artistic gymnasts. He did not make it past the qualification stage that year.

However, at the 2016 Summer Olympics in his home country, Brazil, he shined. He qualified for the floor exercise final in fourth place. In the individual event final, he performed wonderfully and won a silver medal. This was a huge achievement for him and for Brazil.

The Hypólito Skill

Diego Hypólito has a gymnastics move named after him! It's called the Hypólito on the floor exercise. He successfully performed this skill when he won a gold medal at the 2006 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Final in São Paulo, Brazil.

The skill is a full-twisting Arabian double (front) layout. This means he does a double flip forward with a full twist in the air. It's a very difficult and impressive move!
