Diego Matias Hypólito is a famous Brazilian gymnast. He was born on June 19, 1986. He is best known for his amazing skills in the floor exercise event.

Diego became a World Champion in floor exercise in 2005 and again in 2007. He was the first male gymnast from Brazil and South America to win a medal at the World Championships. He has also won many medals in the World Cup, totaling 63!

Diego has represented Brazil in the Summer Olympics three times: in 2008, 2012, and 2016. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in his home country, he won a silver medal in the floor exercise. His sister, Daniele Hypólito, is also a famous gymnast. She was the first Brazilian gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships.

Early Life and Gymnastics Start

Diego Hypólito was born in Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil. Later, his family moved to Rio de Janeiro. His father, Wagner Hypólito, was a bus driver, and his mother, Geni Matias, was a seamstress. Diego has family roots from Greece through his father and from Portugal through his mother.

Diego started gymnastics when he was seven years old. He followed in the footsteps of his older sister, Daniele. They both trained at the Flamengo Rowing Club. Daniele encouraged him to focus on floor exercises. This is where he won his first titles as a young gymnast.

Diego's Amazing Career

Diego quickly became a top gymnast. By the age of 21, he had competed in five World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. These were in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. He was a specialist in the floor exercise. He reached the finals in this event in all five competitions.

He placed fifth in 2002 and fourth in 2003. Then, he won a gold medal in 2005, a silver medal in 2006, and another gold medal in 2007. His gold medal in 2005 made him the first male gymnast from South America to win a medal at the World Championships.

Olympic Challenges and Success

In 2008, Diego faced a challenge when he got dengue fever. But he recovered in time to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He was the only male artistic gymnast representing Brazil there. He performed well in the qualifying rounds for the floor exercise. He even qualified for the final in first place! However, in the final, he unfortunately fell on his last move and finished in sixth place.

Diego also competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He was one of three Brazilian male gymnasts. But he did not make it past the qualification stage that year.

His biggest Olympic moment came at the 2016 Summer Olympics in his home city of Rio de Janeiro. He qualified for the floor exercise final in fourth place. This time, he performed brilliantly and won a silver medal! It was a huge achievement for him and for Brazil.

The Hypólito Skill

Diego Hypólito even has a gymnastics move named after him! It's called the Hypólito on the floor exercise. He successfully performed this move when he won a gold medal at the 2006 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Final in São Paulo, Brazil.

The "Hypólito" skill is a full-twisting Arabian double layout. This means a gymnast does a double flip while twisting their body. It's a very difficult and impressive move!
