Diego de Holguín (born 1486, died 1556) was a Spanish explorer and soldier, known as a conquistador. He became the very first mayor of the city of San Salvador from 1525 to 1528. He was brave and helped explore and settle many new lands in the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico.
Diego de Holguín's Life
Diego de Holguín was born around 1486 in a Spanish town. When he was very young, he traveled to the Americas. In 1506, he settled in what is now the Dominican Republic. There, he helped start cities like Aragua, Puerto Real, and Ciudad de la Vega.
Holguín later joined the Spanish forces led by Pedro de Alvarado. He helped in the conquest of Guatemala and El Salvador. He also served as an alderman, which is like a city council member, in Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala.
Along with Gonzalo de Alvarado, Diego de Holguín helped found the first Spanish settlement of San Salvador. This first town was built near a fortress belonging to the Cuzcatlecos people. In April 1525, he became its first mayor. He served in this important role until April 1528. The city he helped found is now known as Ciudad Vieja. The city of San Salvador was later rebuilt in its current location.
