Diego de Leyva (born around 1580, died 1637) was an important Spanish painter. He was born in a town called Haro in La Rioja, a region in Spain. It is believed that he spent his younger years studying art in Rome, Italy. After his time in Rome, he returned to Spain as a trained artist and settled in the city of Burgos.

What Did Diego de Leyva Paint?

In 1628, the church leaders in Burgos asked Diego de Leyva to create several paintings. He painted portraits of important church officials for the chapel of St. Catalina in the Burgos Cathedral. He also painted a picture called Presentation for the chapel of the Virgin Mary.

Becoming a Monk and Painting Religious Art

In 1633, Diego de Leyva decided to join a special religious community. He moved to the Carthusian monastery of Miraflores. A monastery is a place where monks live and dedicate their lives to religious duties. In 1634, he took his final vows, which means he officially became a monk.

After becoming a monk, Diego de Leyva focused on creating many religious paintings. These included:

  • Fifteen large paintings showing the life of Bruno of Cologne, who was the founder of the Carthusian Order.
  • Eleven paintings depicting martyrdoms, which are scenes of people suffering or dying for their beliefs.

  • A painting of the Crucifixion, which shows Jesus on the cross.
  • Several pictures of the Virgin Mary.

Diego de Leyva passed away in 1637 at the Miraflores monastery, where he had spent his final years creating beautiful religious art.
