Don Diego de León y Navarrete (born in 1807 in Córdoba – died October 15, 1841, in Madrid) was an important Spanish military leader. He joined the Spanish army when he was young, becoming a cavalryman (a soldier who fights on horseback). By the age of 17, he was promoted to the rank of captain.

A Brave Soldier in the Carlist War

Diego de León became famous during the First Carlist War, which was a big conflict in Spain. He fought on the side of the Liberals, also known as Christinos. These were people who supported the young Queen Isabel II.

Fighting in the South

He was known for being very brave. He would often lead his lancers (soldiers with long spears) right into the thickest part of the enemy lines.

Hero at Arcos de la Frontera

One time, at a place called Arcos de la Frontera, he was in charge of only 70 horsemen. He managed to hold back a much larger group of Carlists (who supported a different king) until more Liberal soldiers arrived to help. Because of his bravery, he was given the Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand, which is a very high military honor.

Victories in the North

Later, he fought in the northern part of Spain. He took part in the Battle of Mendigorría. In 1838, he successfully captured the town of Belascoáin from the Carlists. This victory earned him a special noble title.

Later Life and Challenges

In 1840, Diego de León was made Captain-General of New Castile, a very important position. He was also a member of the Moderate Party, a political group in Spain.

Exile and Return

When the regent María Cristina de Borbón (who ruled for the young Queen Isabel II) lost power, Diego de León had to leave Spain and went to France. However, in 1841, he returned and joined a revolt led by O'Donnell. This revolt was against Baldomero Espartero, who was then the powerful leader of Spain.

His Final Days

Sadly, the revolt was not successful. Diego de León was arrested. He was later executed by a firing squad in Madrid.
