Playing Career
Early Years
Dieter Herzog started his football journey in youth teams. From 1956 to 1965, he played for Sterkrade 06/07. After that, he joined VfB Bottrop from 1965 to 1967.
His first professional club was Sportfreunde Hamborn 07. He played there from 1967 to 1970. This was in a lower division of German football.
Time at Fortuna Düsseldorf
In 1970, Herzog moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf. A year later, in 1971, the club returned to the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league. Herzog played a big part in their success.
He played 167 matches for Fortuna Düsseldorf and scored 40 goals. The team finished third in the Bundesliga in both the 1972–73 and 1973–74 seasons. This was a great achievement for the club.
Moving to Bayer 04 Leverkusen
In 1976, Dieter Herzog joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen. At that time, Bayer 04 Leverkusen was trying to get promoted to the Bundesliga. With Herzog's help, they succeeded.
