*Club domestic league appearances and goals |
Dieter Müller, whose birth name was Dieter Kaster, was born on April 1, 1954. He is a famous German former professional footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was a player who mainly tried to score goals.
He had his biggest successes playing for 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league, during the late 1970s. He was the top scorer in the Bundesliga for two seasons in a row! In 1978, he helped his team win both the league title and the German Cup. Müller scored an amazing 177 goals in 303 games in the German league. He even holds a special record for scoring six goals in one game in August 1977, which is still a record today. With 231 goals in 326 games for 1. FC Köln across all competitions, he is still the club's all-time top scorer.
Dieter Müller also played for the West Germany national team in two big tournaments. He was the top scorer at the UEFA Euro 1976 tournament. He was also the only player to score three goals (a hat-trick) in a knockout stage game after coming on as a substitute. He scored two goals at the 1978 FIFA World Cup as well.

Dieter Müller's Football Journey
Dieter Müller played and scored a goal in the UEFA Euro 1976 final. However, West Germany lost that game to Czechoslovakia after a penalty shootout. He was also part of the national team for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. That tournament was a bit disappointing for West Germany, who were the defending champions, as they did not reach the final.
A Record-Breaking Game
While playing for 1. FC Köln, Dieter Müller set a record for the most goals scored by one player in a single Bundesliga match. On August 17, 1977, he scored six goals! This happened during Köln's 7–2 victory over Werder Bremen. He scored in the 12th, 23rd, 32nd, 52nd, 73rd, and 85th minutes of the game. About 19,000 fans watched this amazing performance at Köln's Müngersdorfer Stadion. Interestingly, there are no videos of his goals from that day because television cameramen were on strike.
Top Scorer for Two Seasons
Müller was the top scorer in the Bundesliga for two seasons in a row. He scored 34 goals in 34 games in the 1976–77 season. The next season, 1977–78, he scored 24 goals in 33 games, making him the top scorer again.
Moving to Other Clubs
After leaving Köln, Dieter Müller played for several seasons in France and Switzerland. Later, he returned to West Germany to play again.
