Discover the Digby Pines Resort
The Digby Pines is a famous resort in Nova Scotia. It offers a great place for families and travelers to relax. You can enjoy the beautiful views and many fun activities here.
A Look Back: The Hotel's History
The first hotel on this spot opened in 1905. It was a large wooden building. A local businessman named Harry Churchill built it. During World War I, soldiers used it as a place to stay.
After the war, the Dominion Atlantic Railway bought the hotel. They made it bigger to welcome their train and ship passengers. A famous film actress, Theda Bara, even spent her honeymoon here in 1921!
The railway's owners, the Canadian Pacific Railway, decided to build a brand new hotel. The current building opened on June 24, 1929. It was designed to look like a fancy Norman Chateau. This style is similar to their Algonquin Hotel in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick.
Ownership Changes Over Time
For many years, the Canadian Pacific Railway owned the hotel. Their bell boys would even dip the hotel flag to greet the SS Princess Helene steamship. This ship often visited Digby.
In 1957, Canadian Pacific sold its hotels. The Province of Nova Scotia bought The Pines. They wanted it to be a key place for tourism in the area. It was then known as the "Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa." In late 2019, the resort was sold again. New owners, including the Bear River First Nation, now operate it.
