About Dilip Parikh's Early Life
Dilip Parikh was born in 1937 in Bombay, which is now known as Mumbai. He went to Elphinstone College in Mumbai. There, he earned a degree in Economics. He also studied law.
Before politics, Mr. Parikh was a successful businessman. He owned a company that made plastic products. He was a leader in the plastics industry. For example, he was the President of the Gujarat State Plastic Manufacturers' Association. This was in 1973–74. He also led other industry groups. In the 1980s, he was the president of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Dilip Parikh's Political Journey
Dilip Parikh started his political career in 1990. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He became the Vice President of the state committee for the party.
Becoming an MLA
In 1990, he ran for election to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. This assembly is like a state parliament. He won the election from the Dhandhuka area. He won again in 1995 as a BJP candidate.
After the 1995 election, the BJP formed the government. Keshubhai Patel became the Chief Minister. Mr. Parikh became the Minister of Industries. This meant he was in charge of businesses and factories in the state.
Becoming Chief Minister
In 1996, some political changes happened. A leader named Shankersinh Vaghela left the BJP. He started a new party called the Rashtriya Janata Party. Dilip Parikh joined this new party.
The Rashtriya Janata Party formed a government. They got support from another big party, the Indian National Congress (INC). Shankersinh Vaghela became the Chief Minister.
About a year later, the Indian National Congress decided to stop supporting the government. This caused a political problem. To solve it, a new Chief Minister was chosen. Shankersinh Vaghela stepped down. Dilip Parikh was then sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 1997.
His Time as Chief Minister
Dilip Parikh led a government that did not have a strong majority. His party had only 46 members in the 182-member assembly. The government relied on support from the Indian National Congress. This made the government unstable.
Because of this instability, he resigned on January 5, 1998. He asked for new elections to be held. He continued to serve as a caretaker Chief Minister until March 4, 1998.
After Being Chief Minister
In the 1998 state election, Dilip Parikh ran again from Dhandhuka. However, he lost to the BJP candidate, Bharat Pandya. His party, the Rashtriya Janata Party, won only four seats in total. The BJP won a large majority and formed the government again.
Later, Dilip Parikh joined the Indian National Congress party. After some time, he retired from politics.
His Passing
Dilip Parikh passed away on October 25, 2019. He was in Ahmedabad. He had surgery after a fall a few days before. His body was cremated in Thaltej.
