The Chief Minister of Gujarat is like the main leader of the government in the Indian state of Gujarat. Think of them as the boss who runs the state's daily business. The Governor chooses the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister works with a team called the council of ministers. This team is responsible to the state's assembly, which is like a big meeting of elected representatives. A Chief Minister usually serves for five years. There is no limit to how many times someone can be Chief Minister, as long as they have the support of the assembly.
Gujarat became a state on May 1, 1960. It was formed from the parts of Bombay State where people spoke Gujarati. This happened after a big movement called the Mahagujarat Movement. Jivraj Narayan Mehta was the very first Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was from the INC party.
Narendra Modi from the BJP served as Chief Minister for the longest time. He was in office for over twelve years, from 2001 to 2014. In 2014, he became the prime minister of India. After him, Anandiben Patel became the first woman Chief Minister of Gujarat. The person currently holding the job is Bhupendrabhai Patel from the BJP. He became Chief Minister on September 13, 2021.
