Anandiben Mafatbhai Patel (born 21 November 1941) is an important Indian politician. She is currently the 20th governor of Uttar Pradesh, a role she has held since 2019. Before this, she was the 17th governor of Madhya Pradesh from 2020 to 2021. She also served as Governor of Chhattisgarh from 2018 to 2019.
Anandiben Patel made history as the first and only female Chief Minister of Gujarat. She is also the second woman to be the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, following Sarojini Naidu. She has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1987. From 2002 to 2007, she was the Cabinet Minister for Education. Later, from 2007 to 2014, she held several important roles in the Government of Gujarat.
Early Life and Education
Birth and Schooling
Anandiben Patel was born on 21 November 1941. Her birthplace was Kharod village in the Mehsana district of Gujarat. Her father, Jethabhai, worked as a teacher. She attended N.M. High School, where she was one of only three girl students. In 1960, she started college to study for her Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. She was recognized with the "Veer Bala" award in Mehsana for her excellent achievements in sports.
Becoming a Teacher
In 1967 or 1970, Patel began her career as a teacher. She taught science and mathematics to older students at Mohiniba Kanya Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad. She later became the principal of the school.
Political Journey
A Brave Start in Politics
Anandiben Patel's journey into politics began in 1987. During a school picnic, she bravely saved two girls from drowning in the Sardar Sarovar reservoir. For this act, she received a special bravery award from the President. After this, Keshubhai Patel and Narendra Modi encouraged her to join the BJP. She became the President of the Gujarat Pradesh Mahila Morcha (the women's wing of the BJP) in 1987.
Serving as a Member of Parliament
In 1994, Anandiben Patel was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. The Rajya Sabha is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament.
First Election as Education Minister
Patel left the Rajya Sabha in 1998 to run in her first assembly election. She won from the Mandal assembly area. She then became the cabinet minister for education under Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel. As Education Minister, she started "Lokdarbar" to help with school issues. She also launched "Shala Praveshotsav" to increase student enrollment. Her efforts led to a 100% increase in school admissions.
Continued Service in Gujarat
Anandiben Patel won her second and third assembly elections in 2002 and 2007. She represented the Patan assembly area. She continued as the education minister in her second term. In her third term, she was in charge of Roads & Building and Revenue. In the 2012 elections, she won from the Ghatlodiya area with a very large number of votes. She continued to manage important departments like Road and Building, Revenue, and Urban Development.
Becoming Chief Minister of Gujarat
On 22 May 2014, Anandiben Patel became the 15th Chief Minister of Gujarat. She took over from Narendra Modi, who became the Prime Minister of India. Patel was the first woman to hold the position of Chief Minister in Gujarat. She decided to step down on 1 August 2016, as she was approaching 75 years old. Her resignation was accepted on 4 August 2016. She remained in office until Vijay Rupani became the new Chief Minister on 7 August 2016.
Serving as Governor
In January 2018, she became the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. In August 2018, she also took on the role of Governor of Chhattisgarh for a short period. On 20 July 2019, she became the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, a position she holds to this day.
Personal Life
Anandiben Patel married Mafatlal Patel on 29 May 1962. They lived in Mehsana district for four years before moving to Ahmedabad. Mafatlal was a psychology professor, and Anandiben taught and later became a principal. They have two children, Sanjay and Anar. Sanjay is married to Hina and has a son named Dharm. Anar is married to Jayesh and has a daughter named Sanskruti. Anandiben Patel retired from teaching after 31 years.
Achievements and Awards
Anandiben Patel has received many awards for her work and bravery.
- She was given the Governor's Award for best teacher in Gujarat in 1988.
- In 1989, she received the President's Award for the best teacher.
- She was honored with the 'Sardar Patel' Award in 1999.
- She also received the 'Vidya Gaurav' Award in 2000.
- In 2005, the Patel community gave her the 'Patidar Shiromani' Award.
- She received a special honor for her work in women's empowerment.
- She won the 'Veerbala' award for being first in a school sports event in Mehsana District.
- She received a Gallantry Award for rescuing two girls from drowning in a reservoir.
