Om Prakash Kohli was a respected leader in India. He was known for his work in politics and education. He spent many years teaching before he became a full-time politician. His journey shows how someone can contribute to their country in different ways.
Early Life and Education
Om Prakash Kohli was born in Delhi, which was part of British India at the time. He went to Ramjas School and Khalsa School in New Delhi. He loved to learn and continued his studies at the University of Delhi. There, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Hindi. After his studies, he became a lecturer. He taught at Hansraj College and Deshbandhu College for more than 37 years.
His Political Journey
Mr. Kohli was very active in politics. He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. From 1999 to 2000, he was the president of the party's Delhi unit. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2000. The Rajya Sabha is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament.
He was also involved with student and teacher groups. He was the president of the Delhi University Teacher's Association (DUTA). He also led the ABVP, a large student organization. During a period known as the Emergency, he was arrested. This was a time when many people were held for political reasons.
Serving as Governor
Om Prakash Kohli became the Governor of Gujarat in 2014. He served in this important role until 2019. As Governor, he was the head of the state of Gujarat.
He also took on extra duties for other states. From 2016 to 2018, he was also the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. This is called an "additional charge." For a short time in 2014, he also served as the Governor of Goa. Besides these roles, he was the Chancellor of Gujarat Ayurved University in Jamnagar.
Family and Legacy
Om Prakash Kohli had a family with one son, Vishu Kohli, and two daughters, Ritu Kohli and Suparna Khurana. He passed away on 20 February 2023, at the age of 87. He is remembered for his long service in education and politics.
