Mridula Sinha (born 27 November 1942 – died 18 November 2020) was an important Indian writer and politician. She served as the Governor of Goa from August 2014 to October 2019. She was the first woman to hold this position in Goa.

Mridula Sinha also led the women's group of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), called the BJP Mahila Morcha. After she passed away, she was given India's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2021.

Early Life and Education

Mridula Sinha was born on 27 November 1942, in a village called Chhapra Dharampur Yadu. This village is in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar state, India. Her father was Babu Chhabile Singh, and her mother was Anupa Devi.

She went to school in her local village. Later, she studied at Balika Vidyapeeth, which was a special boarding school for girls. Before finishing her first college degree, her parents arranged for her to marry Ram Kripal Sinha. He was a college lecturer in Muzaffarpur.

After getting married, Mridula continued her studies. She earned a post-graduate degree in Psychology. She then worked as a lecturer at Dr. S.K. Sinha Women's College. Later, she left that job and started her own school in Muzaffarpur.

Writing and Social Work

Mridula Sinha loved to write, especially short stories. Her husband encouraged her to explore her talent. She was very interested in Indian culture and village traditions. She wrote many short stories about these topics. She also collected folk tales from the villages where she and her husband worked.

Many of her stories were printed in Hindi language magazines. These stories were later put together into two books called Bihar ki lok-kathayen (which means "folk-tales of Bihar"). She also wrote several novels. One famous book was a biography of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia, titled Ek Thi Rani Aisi Bhi. A movie was later made based on this book.

Mridula also helped her husband when he ran for elections. She found that her knowledge of local traditions helped her connect with people, especially women. She became very dedicated to social welfare and helping others. She was even named the Chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board.

Political Journey

Mridula Sinha's husband was a government minister in Bihar. She became a member of the national executive committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During the BJP's election campaign in 2014, she was in charge of the BJP Mahila Morcha. This is the women's section of the party.

On 25 August 2014, she was chosen to be the Governor of Goa. This was a very important role. She was also made an ambassador for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. This was a clean India campaign started by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. While she was Governor of Goa, she even adopted a cow and a calf at the official residence, the Raj Bhavan.

Some of Mridula Sinha's works were made into films and TV shows. Her novel Jyon Mehendi Ko Rang became a TV serial. Her short story "Dattak Pita" and her book about Vijayaraje Scindia, Rajpath se lok path par, were made into feature films. These films were called Dattak and Ek thi Rani Aisi Bhi. A film maker named Gul Bahar Singh adapted her major literary works into films and TV.

Translated Works

  • Her book Flames of Desire was translated into English.
  • Anutapt Lankeshwari was translated into Marathi by Rajashree Khandeparkar.

Awards and Honours

Mridula Sinha received an honorary doctorate degree. This was from the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. In 2017, she was also given the Acharya Tulsi Kartritva Puraskar.
