Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar (13 December 1955 – 17 March 2019) was an important Indian politician. He was a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as the Chief Minister of Goa multiple times.
Parrikar was also the Minister of Defence for India. He was the first person from the IIT Bombay to become a Chief Minister in India. He was also the first Chief Minister to stay in office for over a year even after being diagnosed with a serious illness.

Early Life and Education
Manohar Parrikar was born in Mapusa, Goa. His family belonged to the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin community. He went to Loyola High School in Margao.
He finished his 10th grade at G.S. Amonkar Vidya Mandir in Mapusa. He studied in Marathi for his secondary education. Later, he earned a degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) in 1978. IIT Bombay honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001.
Political Journey
Parrikar joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) when he was young. He became a chief instructor there during his school years. After graduating from IIT, he continued his work with the RSS in Mapusa.
He became a local director for the RSS at age 26. He played a key role in the RSS's North Goa branch. He was later asked by the RSS to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His goal was to help the BJP grow in Goa.
Chief Minister of Goa (2000–2005, 2012–2014, 2017–2019)
Parrikar was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Goa in 1994 as a BJP member. He served as the leader of the opposition from June to November 1999. He became the Chief Minister of Goa for the first time on 24 October 2000.
His first term as Chief Minister ended on 27 February 2002. He was re-elected on 5 June 2002 and served another term. In 2005, his government lost its majority in the Assembly. This happened after four BJP members resigned.
In 2007, the BJP, led by Parrikar, lost the Goa state elections. However, in March 2012, the BJP and its allies won the elections. They secured twenty-four seats in the Goa Assembly.
On 14 March 2017, Parrikar was sworn in as Chief Minister of Goa again. One of the allied parties, Goa Forward Party, supported the BJP. They agreed to support only if Parrikar returned as Chief Minister.
Union Minister for Defence (2014–2017)

In the 2014 general elections, the BJP won both Lok Sabha seats in Goa. Parrikar initially did not want to leave Goa. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convinced him to join the central government.
In November 2014, Parrikar was chosen as the Minister of Defence. He replaced Arun Jaitley in this role. To join the national parliament, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.
Illness and Passing
From March to June 2018, Parrikar received treatment in New York, USA. He was being treated for pancreatic cancer. He returned to India and was later admitted to AIIMS, Delhi.
On 27 October 2018, the Government of Goa officially announced his illness. He passed away on 17 March 2019, at his home in Panaji. He was 63 years old.
Many leaders shared their sadness over his death. These included the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, and PM Narendra Modi. On the evening of 18 March, Parrikar was cremated with full state honors. The ceremony took place at Miramar in Panaji.
Biography
In June 2020, a book about his life was published. It was titled "An Extraordinary Life : A Biography of Manohar Parrikar." The book was written by journalists Sadguru Patil and Mayabhushan Nagvenkar. It tells the story of Parrikar's life and how he rose to power.
Awards and Recognition
Manohar Parrikar received several important awards and honors:
- 2020: He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
- 2018: He received an Honorary Doctorate from National Institute of Technology Goa.
- 2012: He was named CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in the politics category.
- 2001: He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT-Mumbai.
Legacy
His contributions are remembered in several ways. In February 2020, the Indian Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses was renamed. It is now called the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses.
In December 2022, the new International Airport at Mopa, Goa was named after him. It is now known as Manohar Parrikar International Airport.
