The Minister of Defence (also called Rakṣā Maṁtrī in Hindi) is a very important leader in the Government of India. This person is in charge of the Ministry of Defence. This ministry helps keep India safe and secure.

The Defence Minister is one of the most senior members of the Union Council of Ministers. This group of ministers helps the Prime Minister run the country. The Defence Minister also leads important groups like the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. They are also in charge of special universities for defence studies.

Sometimes, the Defence Minister gets help from other ministers. These are called the Minister of State for Defence and the Deputy Minister of Defence.

India's first Defence Minister after it became independent was Baldev Singh Chokkar. He worked in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's government from 1947 to 1952. Today, Rajnath Singh is the current Defence Minister of India.
