Chidambaram Subramaniam (born January 30, 1910 – died November 7, 2000), often called CS, was an important Indian politician and freedom fighter. He held many big jobs in the government, like Finance Minister and Defence Minister. He also served as the Governor of Maharashtra.

One of his most important achievements was leading India's Green Revolution. This was a time when India learned to grow enough food for everyone, becoming self-sufficient. He worked with scientists like M. S. Swaminathan to make this happen. For his great work, he received the Bharat Ratna in 1998, which is India's highest civilian award.

Early Life and Education

Chidambaram Subramaniam was born in a village called Senguttaipalayam. This village is near Pollachi in what was then the Madras Presidency. Today, this area is part of the Tamil Nadu state.

He finished his early schooling in Pollachi. After that, he moved to Chennai for higher studies. He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Physics. He studied at the Presidency College, Chennai. This college was part of the University of Madras. Later, he also got a law degree from the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai.

Political Journey

Fighting for Freedom

Subramaniam was very active in the fight for India's freedom. He joined the Civil disobedience movement when he was in college. This movement was against British rule. He was even put in jail in 1942 during the Quit India Movement.

After India became independent, he was chosen to be part of the Constituent Assembly. This group helped write the Constitution of India. From 1952 to 1962, he served as a minister in Madras State. He handled important areas like Education, Law, and Finance.

Leading the Green Revolution

Chidambaram Subramaniam played a huge role in changing how India grew its food. He worked with scientists like M. S. Swaminathan. Together, they started what is known as the Indian Green Revolution.

As the Minister for Food and Agriculture, he brought in new ideas. He introduced special seeds that produced a lot more crops. He also encouraged farmers to use more fertilizers. These changes helped India grow much more food. By 1972, India had a record amount of wheat. This helped the country become self-sufficient in food.

Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, a famous scientist, praised Subramaniam's work. He said that Subramaniam's vision and decisions were key to this agricultural change. Subramaniam also supported the White Revolution. This movement helped increase milk production in India. He appointed Verghese Kurien to lead this effort.
