Shivraj Vishwanath Patil Chakurkar (born 12 October 1935 and passed away on 12 December 2025) was an important Indian politician. He held many significant roles in the Indian government.
He served as the Union Minister of Home Affairs for India from 2004 to 2008. Before that, he was the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha (the lower house of India's Parliament) from 1991 to 1996.
Mr. Patil also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015. In the 1980s, he was a Minister of Defence in the governments led by Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
He resigned from his role as Home Minister in November 2008 after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, taking responsibility for the events. He passed away on 12 December 2025 due to age-related illness.

Early Life and Education
Shivraj Vishwanath Patil Chakurkar was born on October 12, 1935. His birthplace was the village of Chakur in the Latur district of what was then Hyderabad State. This area is now part of Maharashtra, India.
He went to Osmania University in Hyderabad, where he earned a degree in Science. Later, he studied law at Bombay University. From 1967 to 1969, he worked in local government for the Latur Municipality.
Mr. Patil married Vijaya Patil in June 1963. They had two children, a son and a daughter. He was also a follower of Sathya Sai Baba.
Beginning in State Politics
From 1972 to 1980, Shivraj Patil was a representative for Latur City in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He served two terms during this period.
During his time in the state assembly, he held several important roles. These included Chairman of the Public Undertakings Committee, Deputy Minister for Law & Judiciary, Irrigation, and Protocol. He also served as the Deputy Speaker and later the Speaker of the Assembly.
Moving to National Politics
In 1980, Mr. Patil was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha (India's Parliament) from the Latur constituency. This marked his entry into national politics.
He was very successful, winning seven Lok Sabha elections in a row. These victories were in 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999. In the 2004 Lok Sabha election, he did not win, losing to Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Rupatai Patil Nilangekar.
Important Roles in Government
Mr. Patil first joined the government led by Indira Gandhi. He served as the Minister of State for Defence from 1980 to 1982. Later, he was in charge of the Commerce Ministry from 1982 to 1983.
He also oversaw departments like Science and Technology, Atomic Energy, Electronics, Space, and Ocean Development from 1983 to 1984. During these years (1983-1986), he was the vice-president of CSIR India.
Serving under Rajiv Gandhi
In the government led by Rajiv Gandhi, Shivraj Patil was the Minister for Personnel and Defence Production. He also independently managed Civil Aviation and Tourism.
He held many key positions within his political party, especially after Sonia Gandhi became its president. He is well-known for starting the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in India in 1992. He also led the committee that wrote the party's plans for the 1999 Lok Sabha election.
As Speaker of Lok Sabha
As the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, he helped modernize the Parliament. He introduced computerization to share information with members. He also oversaw the building of the Parliament Library and the live broadcast of Lok Sabha proceedings, including the "Question Hour."
From 1991 to 1995, he represented India in various international parliamentary meetings.
Union Minister of Home Affairs
In 2004, Shivraj Patil became the Union Minister of Home Affairs. Even though he lost the Lok Sabha election in 2004, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of Parliament) in July 2004. This allowed him to take on this very important role.
His time as Home Minister included some challenging events. He resigned from this position on November 30, 2008. This was after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and he took moral responsibility for the situation.
Mr. Patil was also considered for the President of India and later for the Vice-President of India role.
Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh
After his time as Home Minister, Shivraj Patil was appointed as the Governor of Punjab. He also served as the Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
