Vilasrao Dagadojirao Deshmukh (born May 26, 1945 – died August 14, 2012) was an important Indian politician. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra state two times. He also held several important positions in the central government of India. He was known for his work in different areas like science, rural development, and heavy industries.
Vilasrao Deshmukh was a member of the Indian National Congress party. He came from the Latur district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. He was also a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament.

His Early Life and Family
Vilasrao Deshmukh was born on May 26, 1945, in a village called Babhalgaon in Latur district, Maharashtra. He was the oldest son of Dagdojirao Deshmukh and Sushiladevi. He had two younger sisters and one younger brother, Diliprao.
His grandfather, Venkatrao Deshmukh, was a revenue officer in Hyderabad State. He had special rights to collect taxes and maintain law and order. Vilasrao's father, Dagdojirao, inherited some of these rights. He was also the head of their native village.
Vilasrao's mother, Sushila Devi, passed away before his father. Many of the schools and institutes Vilasrao later founded are named after her. His younger brother, Diliprao Deshmukh, also became a politician.
Education and Family Life
After finishing school in his hometown of Latur, Vilasrao Deshmukh studied law. He attended ILS Law College, Pune and then Pune University. After completing his studies, he started working as a lawyer.
In 1973, he married Vaishali. They had three sons:
- Amit Deshmukh: He is a MLA in Maharashtra.
- Dheeraj Deshmukh: He is also a MLA.
- Riteish Deshmukh: He is a well-known actor in Bollywood films.
His daughters-in-law include Aditi Pratap, Genelia D'Souza, and Deepshikha Deshmukh.
In his home district, people called Vilasrao Deshmukh 'Thorle Saheb', which means 'older companion'. Among his followers, he was known as 'Anna', meaning 'big brother'. He was a religious person and enjoyed listening to songs by Mohammed Rafi. He preferred to live in his ancestral home in the village.
His Political Journey
Vilasrao Deshmukh started his political career in his village. From 1974 to 1980, he was a member of the Babhalgaon Village Panchayat. He also served as its Sarpanch (village chief) from 1974 to 1976.
He was also involved in the Osmanabad Zilla Parishad. He became the President of the Osmanabad District Youth Congress from 1975 to 1978. Later, he became the President of the District wing of the Congress (I) party.
Serving in Maharashtra
From 1980 to 1995, Vilasrao Deshmukh was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He won elections in 1980, 1985, and 1990. During these years, he held many important roles as a Minister. He looked after different departments like Home, Public Works, Agriculture, Education, and Industry.
In 1995, he lost an election. However, he made a strong comeback in September 1999. He was re-elected to the State Legislature from the Latur Constituency. He won by a very large margin.
He became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the first time on October 18, 1999. He served until January 17, 2003. He was re-elected as Chief Minister for a second time on November 1, 2004, and served until December 4, 2008.
Working for the Central Government
After his time as Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh became a member of the Rajya Sabha. On May 28, 2009, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appointed him as a Union Minister. He became the Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
Later, he also served as the Minister of Rural Development. On July 12, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences.
His Contributions to Education
Vilasrao Deshmukh was very interested in education. He founded the Manjra Charitable Trust. This trust runs many colleges in Latur and Mumbai. Some of these include:

- Abhinav College, Latur
- VDF Polytechnic, Pharmacy College, and Engineering College
- Goldcrest High ICSE School
- Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology in Mumbai
- Sushiladevi Deshmukh Vidyalaya in Latur and Airoli, Navi Mumbai
He also founded Marathwada Mitramandal. This organization runs engineering and commerce colleges in Pune.
His Final Days
In 2011, Vilasrao Deshmukh was diagnosed with a serious health condition. In August 2012, he was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai. He was then flown to Chennai for special medical care. Sadly, he passed away on August 14, 2012. He was surrounded by his family.
Many important people expressed their sadness at his passing. These included the then-President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Leaders from different political parties also shared their condolences. Many people from Bollywood, including his son's friends, also expressed their grief.
His cremation took place on August 15, 2012, which is India's Independence Day. It was held in his home village of Babhalgaon in Latur district.
Legacy
Vilasrao Deshmukh is remembered for his dedication to public service.
- In 2019, the Government Medical College, Latur was named after him.
- Also in 2019, the Eastern Freeway (Mumbai) was named after him.
