Vasantrao Banduji Patil (born November 13, 1917 – died March 1, 1989) was an important Indian politician. He came from Sangli, in the state of Maharashtra. Many people saw him as a strong leader and a popular figure in Maharashtra's politics.
Patil served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra two times. His first term was from May 17, 1977, to July 18, 1978. He served again from February 2, 1983, to June 1, 1985. He also worked as the governor of Rajasthan for almost two years, from 1985 to 1987.

Early Life and Family
Vasantrao Patil was born on November 13, 1917. His birthplace was 'Padmale', a village near Sangli. He completed his early education and then became a farmer.
He was married and had a son named Prakash Patil. Prakash Patil later represented Sangli in the Lok Sabha, which is India's Parliament. Vasantrao's grandson, Pratik Patil, also became a Member of Parliament from Sangli.
Role in India's Freedom Struggle
Vasantrao Patil was a brave freedom fighter. He joined the movement to free India from British rule. In 1940, he became the secretary for the Tasgaon Taluka Congress.
In 1942, Mahatma Gandhi started the Satyagraha movement. Vasantrao Patil joined this peaceful protest. He was arrested by the British government for his actions. While in jail, he met other important leaders like Babasaheb Kher and Sardar Patel.
He believed that strong actions were needed to gain freedom. He took part in activities to support the freedom struggle. The British government even offered a reward for his capture. He was injured while trying to escape from jail. He was sentenced to prison for 13 years for his role in the independence movement.
Political Journey and Public Service
Vasantrao Patil was released from prison on April 25, 1946. The people of Sangli welcomed him warmly. After India became independent, he focused on helping farmers.
In 1951, he started a Market Committee. This committee helped farmers get fair prices for their crops. In 1958, he helped create a large cooperative sugar factory. This factory helped many farmers in the region.
He also worked to improve irrigation in Sangli. This helped farmers grow more crops. In 1960, he became a leader for a cooperative society that processed groundnuts.
Vasantrao Patil also cared deeply about education and health. He served as the Chairman of the Latthe Education Society. He helped establish the Miraj Medical College and a Civil Hospital. He also helped set up the Akashwani (All India Radio station) in Sangli.
He became a Minister in Maharashtra in 1972. Later, he served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra three times. In 1980, he was elected as a member of the 7th Lok Sabha from Sangli.
Contributions to Education
Vasantrao Patil made big efforts to improve education in Maharashtra. Before 1983, there were not many engineering and technical colleges in the state. Many students had to go to other states to study.
Patil supported a new law to allow private engineering and technical colleges to open in Maharashtra. This helped Maharashtra become a hub for technical education. He also founded the Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil Institute of Technology near Sangli.
Recognition and Legacy
Vasantrao Patil received the Padma Bhushan award in 1967. This is one of India's highest civilian honors. The Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil Pratishthan's College of Engineering in Mumbai is named after him.
Vasantrao Patil passed away on March 1, 1989. He is remembered for his dedication to public service and his efforts to improve the lives of people in Maharashtra.
