Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar (born February 9, 1931 – died August 5, 2020) was an important leader in the Indian National Congress party. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a big state in India.
He was the Chief Minister from June 1985 to March 1986. His time in office was quite short. He stepped down from his role early due to a controversy involving some exam results.
His daughter-in-law, Rupatai Patil Nilangekar, also became a politician. She represented Latur (Lok Sabha constituency) for the BJP party from 2004 to 2009.
Helping Education Grow
Shivajirao Nilangekar cared a lot about education. In 1968, he started the Maharashtra Education Trust. This trust helped build many schools and colleges.
- They set up about four senior colleges.
- They also opened twelve higher secondary schools.
- Fifteen primary schools were started to help younger students.
He also helped create special colleges. The Maharashtra Pharmacy College in Nilanga opened in 1984. The Maharashtra Poly. (D.Pharmacy) Institute, which got government help, started in 1981. Later, the Maharashtra College of Engineering opened in 1983.
Besides his work, Shivajirao enjoyed reading books and listening to classical music. He also liked playing sports like volleyball and table tennis. He was born in his hometown of Nilanga.
Later Years
Shivajirao passed away on August 5, 2020, when he was 89 years old. He died due to problems from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
