Babasaheb Anantrao Bhosale (born January 15, 1921 – died October 6, 2007) was an Indian lawyer and politician. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from January 1982 to February 1983.
Early Life and Education
Babasaheb Bhosale was born on January 15, 1921, in Kaledhon, a village in the Satara district of Maharashtra. He studied law at Shahaji Law College in Kolhapur. Later, he went to London and passed the Bar-at-law exam at Lincoln's Inn in 1951. After returning to India, he worked as a lawyer in Satara for ten years.
During 1941–42, Bhosale was put in jail for taking part in India's fight for freedom. He later moved to Mumbai with his five children. There, he worked at the high court and held many important political positions.
His Political Journey
In 1978, Babasaheb Bhosale ran for the Assembly election in Nehrunagar (Vidhan Sabha constituency) in Kurla, Mumbai, but he did not win. However, in 1980, he was elected to the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha (the state assembly). This was his first time as a MLA.
Soon after, he became a minister. He was in charge of areas like law and justice in the A.R. Antulay Ministry. He then took over from A.R. Antulay to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Time as Chief Minister
Babasaheb Bhosale was chosen as Chief Minister by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This decision surprised many, including Bhosale himself. Even though he was Chief Minister for only 377 days, his time in office is remembered for several important decisions.
He started a plan for free education for girls up to matriculation (a school-leaving exam). He also helped create the Gadchiroli district and opened a new branch of the Bombay High Court in Aurangabad. Bhosale also introduced welfare programs for freedom fighters, including a pension plan. He took strong action against a strike by policemen, ending their union. At the Vithoba Temple in Pandharpur, he helped remove the old system of 'Badwe' (priests). People also remembered him for his cleverness and good sense of humor.
However, his time as Chief Minister also faced some challenges and disagreements within his political party. His rule ended on February 1, 1983. Vasantdada Patil was then elected as the new Chief Minister by the Congress Party members.
Many people who were part of Bhosale's cabinet later held important jobs. This included Pratibha Patil, who became the President of India, and Vilasrao Deshmukh, who also became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
His Family
Babasaheb Bhosale was the son-in-law of Tulsidas Jadhav. Tulsidas Jadhav was a freedom fighter and a member of the Rajya Sabha (one of India's parliament houses). Bhosale's brother, Shivajirao Bhosale, was a vice-chancellor at Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.
His elder daughter, Mrs. Shanta Yadav, retired as a professor. His son, Ashok, is a businessman. His daughter, Saroj Bhosale, is a successful businesswoman. His son, Dilip, has been a judicial member of Lokpal since March 2019. His youngest son, Dr. Rajan, is a leading expert in sex education in India.
Death
Babasaheb Bhosale passed away at the Bombay Hospital in Mumbai on October 6, 2007. He was 86 years old.
