Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai (born October 30, 1929 – died July 25, 2015) was an important Indian politician and social activist. People often called him Dadasaheb Gavai. He was a senior leader in the Ambedkarite movement, which worked for equality and justice. He also founded the Republican Party of India (Gavai).
Gavai was the President of the Republican Party of India, a party based on the ideas of Babasaheb Ambedkar. He worked closely with Babasaheb Ambedkar, who is known as the father of the Republic of India. Gavai served as the Governor of three different states: Bihar, Sikkim, and Kerala. He was also a Member of Parliament in both houses of the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. For 30 years, Gavai was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, where he held important roles like chairman and leader of the opposition.

Life and Political Journey
Early Life and Council Work
R. S. Gavai was born in 1929 in Daryapur, a town in the Amravati district of Maharashtra. He followed the ideas of Ambedkarism and was a Buddhist. Gavai was a farmer and also enjoyed wrestling.
From 1964 to 1994, he was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. During this long period, he held several key positions. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council from 1968 to 1978. Later, he became the Chairman from 1978 to 1984. He also served twice as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, first from 1986 to 1988 and again from 1990 to 1991.
Serving in Parliament
In 1998, Gavai was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha from the Amravati area. The Lok Sabha is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. After that, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha (the other house of Parliament) representing Maharashtra State. He served in the Rajya Sabha from April 2000 until April 2006.
Becoming a Governor
In June 2006, Gavai was appointed the Governor of Bihar. A Governor is like the head of a state in India. He also served as the temporary Governor of Sikkim for about a month, from July 13 to August 12, 2006.
On June 26, 2008, Gavai was appointed the Governor of Kerala. He officially took office as Governor of Kerala on July 10, 2008.
Important Contributions and Legacy
R. S. Gavai received several awards for his work. He was given the Kusta Mitra Award. He also received National Integration awards for promoting peace and harmony among people.
He was the President of the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti, which looks after Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur. Deekshabhoomi is a very important place for Buddhists in India. He also led the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Shikshan Prasarak Mandal in Amravati, an organization that promotes education.
Gavai passed away on July 25, 2015, in Nagpur. He is remembered for his dedication to social justice and his long career in public service. He is survived by his wife, Kamaltai, and their children, including his sons Bhushan Gavai, who is a judge in the Supreme Court of India, and Rajendra Gavai, a political leader.
