Bali Ram Bhagat (born October 7, 1922 – died January 2, 2011) was an important Indian politician. He was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha (which is like India's main parliament house) for many years. He also held two very important jobs: he was the 6th Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the 13th Foreign Minister of India.
Early Life and Joining Politics
Bali Ram Bhagat was born in Patna, Bihar, on October 7, 1922. His family was well-off. He joined the Indian National Congress party in 1939. This was during the time when India was fighting for its freedom from British rule. He even took part in the Quit India movement, which was a big protest asking the British to leave India. He went to Patna College and then Patna University, where he studied economics.
A Long Political Career
After India became independent, Bali Ram Bhagat became a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented different areas in Bihar, like Patna-cum-Shahabad and Shahabad. He served five terms as an MP from 1952 to 1977. In 1977, his party, the Congress, lost power for the first time, and he lost his seat. But he came back and won as an MP again in 1980 and 1984 from other areas.
Mr. Bhagat held many different minister positions. From 1963 to 1967, he was a Minister of State for Planning and Finance. He also worked in the Ministry of Defence for a short time. Later, he became the Minister of State for External Affairs, which deals with India's relationships with other countries. In 1969, he became a full cabinet minister, in charge of Foreign Trade and Supply. He also served as the Minister of Steel and Heavy Engineering.
One of his most important roles was being the Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1976 to 1977. The Speaker is like the referee of the parliament, making sure debates run smoothly. He then served as the Foreign Minister of India from 1985 to 1986. This job involves representing India to the rest of the world.
Later in his career, he became a governor. He was the governor of Himachal Pradesh for a short time in 1993. Then, he was the governor of Rajasthan from 1993 to 1998. A governor is like the head of a state in India. Bali Ram Bhagat passed away in New Delhi on January 2, 2011.
