Vidya Charan Shukla (born August 2, 1929 – died June 11, 2013) was an important Indian politician. He worked in politics for over 60 years! He was mostly a member of the Indian National Congress party. He also joined a few other political parties during his long career. Many people knew him as a close friend and colleague of Indira Gandhi, who was a former Prime Minister of India.

His Early Life and Family
Vidya Charan Shukla was born on August 2, 1929, in a city called Raipur. His father, Ravishankar Shukla, was a lawyer and a politician. He was the very first Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh state.
Vidya Charan Shukla also had an older brother, Shyama Charan Shukla. His brother was also a politician and served as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Vidya Charan Shukla had seven other brothers and sisters.
He finished his studies at Morris College, Nagpur in 1951. Before becoming a full-time politician, he started a company. This company organized exciting trips to see wildlife in the forests of central India.
Becoming a Politician
Joining the Lok Sabha
In 1957, Vidya Charan Shukla was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). This means he became a representative for people in the Lok Sabha, which is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He was one of the youngest MPs at that time.
He won elections to the Lok Sabha many times. He represented different areas like Balodabazar, Mahasamund, and Raipur. In total, he was elected to the Lok Sabha nine times!
Working as a Minister
When Indira Gandhi became Prime Minister in 1966, she chose Vidya Charan Shukla to be a minister in her government. From 1967 to 1977, he served as a Minister of State. This included being in charge of Information and Broadcasting.
During a period known as 'The Emergency', he was the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. His job involved managing how news and information were shared with the public. He also served as the Minister for External Affairs (Foreign Minister) from 1990 to 1991.
Later, he returned to the Congress Party. From 1991 to 1996, he was a Cabinet Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. During this time, he was the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of Irrigation.
Changing Political Parties
Vidya Charan Shukla was mainly with the Indian National Congress party for most of his career. However, he also joined other parties for short periods. These included Jan Morcha, Janata Dal, and Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya).
In 2003, he joined the Nationalist Congress Party. Later that same year, he moved to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, after losing an election in 2004, he left the BJP. In 2007, he rejoined the Congress Party and remained a member until his death.
His Final Days
In May 2013, Vidya Charan Shukla was part of a political event in Chhattisgarh. During this event, he was sadly injured in an attack. He was taken to a hospital in Gurgaon for treatment.
Sadly, he passed away on June 11, 2013, due to his injuries. He was 83 years old.
Many important leaders shared their sadness about his death. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, said he was a great politician and leader. The Prime Minister at the time, Manmohan Singh, and other leaders paid their respects.
Vidya Charan Shukla is survived by his wife and three daughters.
