Ramesh Bais was born on August 2, 1947. He is an Indian politician who has held many important roles. From 2023 to 2024, he served as the Governor of Maharashtra. Before that, he was the Governor of Jharkhand (2021-2023) and the Governor of Tripura (2019-2021).
Ramesh Bais is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, a major political party in India. He has also been a Union Minister, which means he was in charge of different government departments. He served under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was elected seven times to the Lok Sabha, which is like one of the two main houses of the Indian Parliament. He represented the Raipur area for many years.

Early Life and Family
Ramesh Bais was born in Raipur, which was part of British India at the time. Today, Raipur is in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. His father's name was Khomlal Bais.
He finished his high school education in Bhopal. In 1968, he married Rambai Bais. They have three children: one son and two daughters. Before becoming a full-time politician, Ramesh Bais worked as an agriculturist, which means he was involved in farming.
His Journey in Politics
Ramesh Bais started his political journey in 1978. He was first elected as a councillor for the Municipal Corporation of Raipur. This was his first step into public service.
Roles at the State Level
After serving as a councillor, Ramesh Bais moved to state-level politics.
- In 1980, he won an election to become a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. This is like being a state representative.
- He served on important committees in the Assembly, like the Estimates Committee and the Library Committee.
- From 1982 to 1988, he was a state secretary for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh.
Serving in the National Parliament
Ramesh Bais then moved to national politics.
- In 1989, he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time. The Lok Sabha is the lower house of India's Parliament.
- He represented the Raipur area.
- He was re-elected many times, serving from 1996 to 2019. This shows how much support he had from the people of Raipur.
- During his time in Parliament, he was part of various committees. These committees help make decisions on different topics, like agriculture and public accounts.
As a Union Minister
Ramesh Bais also served as a Union Minister under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. A Union Minister is a very important role in the central government.
- From 1998 to 1999, he was the Union Minister of State for Steel and Mines.
- He then served as Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers (1999-2000).
- Later, he was the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (2000-2003).
- He also held independent charge as Minister of State for Mines (2003-2004) and Environment & Forests (2004).
Becoming a Governor
After many years in Parliament and as a minister, Ramesh Bais was appointed as a Governor. A Governor is the head of a state in India, representing the President.
Governor of Tripura
- In July 2019, he became the 18th Governor of Tripura. He served in this role until July 2021.
Governor of Jharkhand
- From July 2021 to February 2023, he was the 10th Governor of Jharkhand.
- During his time as Governor of Jharkhand, he focused on improving the state. He returned several bills to the state government. He believed this was important for the state's progress and followed the rules of the Constitution.
Governor of Maharashtra
- In February 2023, he was appointed the 23rd Governor of Maharashtra. He took over after the previous governor resigned.
