Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, known as C. P. Radhakrishnan, is an important Indian politician. He was elected to become the Vice President of India on 9 September 2025. He will officially start his new role on 12 September 2025. Before this, he served as the Governor of Maharashtra from July 2024 until September 2025. He was also the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. Mr. Radhakrishnan has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since he was young. He was also a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha for Coimbatore from 1998 to 2004. He also led the BJP in Tamil Nadu from 2003 to 2006.

Early Life and Education
C. P. Radhakrishnan was born on 4 May 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, India. His parents were C. K. Ponnusamy and K. Janaki. When he was in college, he was a champion in table tennis. He earned a degree in Business Administration (BBA) from V. O. Chidambaram College in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. From the age of 16, Mr. Radhakrishnan became involved with political and community organizations.
Journey in Politics
In 1974, C. P. Radhakrishnan was chosen for a state committee of a political group. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) when it was formed in 1980. He worked closely with a respected leader named Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Serving in Parliament
In 1998, Mr. Radhakrishnan was elected to the Lok Sabha, which is a main part of India's Parliament. He represented the Coimbatore area. He won this election and was re-elected in 1999. He was one of the first BJP members to win in Tamil Nadu at that time. During his time in Parliament, he was part of a group that went to the United Nations. In 2003, he spoke at the UN General Assembly about helping people during disasters. His time as a Member of Parliament ended after the 2004 elections. He also served on important committees related to public businesses and finance.
Leading the Party in Tamil Nadu
From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Radhakrishnan was the state president for the BJP in Tamil Nadu. During this time, he led a long journey called a rath yatra. This journey was to promote ideas like connecting India's rivers and working against unfair treatment of people. He traveled across all parts of Tamil Nadu during this journey. He also helped organize the BJP's work in Kerala. In 2012, he participated in protests to support community issues in Mettupalayam.
Later Elections and Roles
Mr. Radhakrishnan ran for election in Coimbatore again in 2014 and 2019. He received many votes, showing strong support. From 2016 to 2020, he was the chairman of the Coir Board of India. This board helps small and medium businesses that work with coir, a natural fiber from coconuts. He was also a national executive member of the BJP.

Governor of Jharkhand
On 12 February 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that C. P. Radhakrishnan would become the Governor of Jharkhand. He officially took office on 18 February 2023 and served until 30 July 2024.
Additional Responsibilities
From 19 March 2024 to 30 July 2024, he also took on extra duties. He served as the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. These were temporary roles.
Governor of Maharashtra
On 27 July 2024, Mr. Radhakrishnan was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra. He served in this important role until 11 September 2025. Other leaders took over his previous positions in Telangana, Jharkhand, and Puducherry.
Becoming Vice President
The Vice President of India is a very important leader. They are the second-highest constitutional office in India. They also serve as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, which is another part of India's Parliament.
The Election Campaign
On 17 August 2025, after the previous Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, resigned, the BJP announced that C. P. Radhakrishnan would be their candidate. Many political parties supported him, including the AIADMK, JD(U), NCP, TDP, and Shiv Sena. He ran against B. Sudarshan Reddy, who was supported by another group of parties.
Election Victory
The election results were announced on 9 September 2025. C. P. Radhakrishnan won the election! He received 452 votes, defeating his opponent by 152 votes. He will officially become the Vice President of India on 12 September 2025.

C. P. Radhakrishnan married R. Sumathi on 25 November 1985. They have two children. He is a member of Lions Clubs International, which is a community service organization. In his free time, he enjoys playing cricket, volleyball, and going for long-distance runs.
